Do Not Trust This Book
By Robert A. Saigh
I edited the latest edition of Exploring Agriscience, and if you are a teacher do not buy it. It is so rife with errors as to be useless. This author would have you believe that all hormones, steroids, and chemicals used by the dairy and meat industry are safe. He would have you not to worry about any of the pesticides and that people are just worry over nothing. He also concludes that the organic industry is a waste of money, time, and effort, and that no proof exists that organic food is better than mass produced food.

If an adult read this book, I would assume he/she would be able to read between the lines. However, an 8th grader (this book's audience) will not know that he/she is being fed industry propaganda.

Please think twice about buying this book for your students unless you are prepared to undo much of the damage it incurs.

Celebrating the Jewish Year: The Spring and Summer Holidays: Passover, Shavuot, The Omer, Tisha B'Av, by Rabbi Paul Steinberg

2009 National Jewish Book Award Winner, Jewish Family Literature

JPS’s holiday books take us through the joys, spirit, and meaning of the seasons. As we move from season to season, Paul Steinberg shares with us a rich collection of readings from many of the Jewish greats—Maimonides, Rashi, Nehama Leibowitz, Irving Greenberg, Shlomo Carlebach, Marge Piercy, Elie Wiesel, Martin Buber, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Arthur Green, and others—and he guides us in discovering for ourselves the many treasures within each text. Some of the readings teach us about the history of each holiday, as well as its theological, ethical, agricultural, and seasonal importance and interpretation; others give us inspiration and much food for thought. These stories, essays, poems, anecdotes, and rituals help us discover how deeply Jewish traditions are rooted in nature’s yearly cycle, and how beautifully season and spirit are woven together throughout the Jewish year.

the Jewish kids catalog
By Carol A. Parker
Wide-ranging collection of crafts, cooking projects, stories, historical info, holiday ideas, songs etc. Contains excellent bibliography so you can find other books if something is of particular interest to your family. Geared to school-aged kids more than pre-schoolers. (Reads at an upper elementary-grade level.) A resource book for parents to read-aloud or to draw ideas from. If you need your imagination sparked or are a family new to Judaism this book offers a ton of useful material.

Thanks to these generous donors for making the publication of this book possible: David Lerman and Shelley Wallock; D. Walter Cohen, Wendy and Leonard Cooper; Rabbi Howard Gorin; Gittel and Alan Hilibrand; Marjorie and Jeffrey Major; Jeanette Lerman Neubauer and Joe Neubauer; Gayle and David Smith; and Harriet and Donald Young.

Ever since Abraham’s famous argument with God, Judaism has been full of debate. Moses and Korah, David and Nathan, Hillel and Shammai, the Vilna Gaon and the Ba’al Shem Tov, Spinoza and the Amsterdam Rabbis . . . the list goes on. Jews debate justice, authority, inclusion, spirituality, resistance, evolution, Zionism, and more. No wonder that Judaism cherishes the expression machloket l’shem shamayim, “an argument for the sake of heaven.”  In this concise but important survey, Rabbi Barry L. Schwartz presents the provocative and vibrant thesis that debate and disputation are not only encouraged within Judaism but reside at the very heart of Jewish history and theology. In his graceful, engaging, and creative prose, Schwartz presents an introduction to an intellectual history of Judaism through the art of argumentation.
Beyond their historical importance, what makes these disputations so compelling is that nearly all of them, regardless of their epochs, are still being argued. Schwartz builds the case that the basis of Judaism is a series of unresolved rather than resolved arguments.
Drawing on primary sources, and with a bit of poetic license, Schwartz reconstructs the real or imagined dialogue of ten great debates and then analyzes their significance and legacy. This parade of characters spanning three millennia of biblical, rabbinic, and modern disputation reflects the panorama of Jewish history with its monumental political, ethical, and spiritual challenges.

No Debating the Value of this Book
By Lance Strate
Rabbi Schwartz's latest book, Judaism's Great Debates, is a well-written and accessible guide to some of the major disputes in Jewish history, and as such, serves as a great introduction to this essential element within the world's oldest monotheistic tradition.

The book presents us with 10 debates in all, stretching all the way from Abraham's argument with God to spare the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah, to the differing views on Zionism of Theodor Herzl and Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise at the turn of the 20th century. Each debate is presented in a concise form, with emphasis on the dialogue, whether real or virtual, between the disputants. And most importantly, each debate is presented with an eye towards the continuing relevance of the issues under consideration for contemporary life. The debates are a part of a living tradition, and are in their own way reflective of the contradictions inherent in the human condition.

Each of the 10 debates is thought-provoking, and provides an excellent opportunity for discussion and self-examination. But I do have my favorites. The 3rd debate, between Moses and the daughters of Zelophehad is remarkable for its relation to women's rights, the fact that it implies flexibility in regard to Mosaic Law, and its connection to the question of intermarriage. Chapter 4's debate between King David and the prophet Nathan is a sobering case of the abuse of authority and the need to speak truth to power, and the essential ideal that no one is above the law. The debate between Hillel and Shammai in Chapter 6 is a classic in Jewish tradition, encapsulating the conflict over lenient and strict interpretations of the Law, between liberal and conservative, progressive and fundamentalist. Chapter 7's dispute between the Vilna Gaon and the Baal Shem Tov similarly speaks to the conflict between head and heart, between intellect and emotion, between study and prayer, and offers two sides of Judaism that are each in their own ways worthy of celebration. The debate between Spinoza and the Amsterdam Rabbis in Chapter 8 regards in unblinking manner a dark moment in Jewish history, where one of the greatest of modern philosophers, and one of the founders of the Enlightenment movement, was excommunicated for his views--this chapter alone is worth the price of the book!

Barry Schwartz explains that he took part in tournament debate as a high school student, and his love of the form is present throughout the volume. Despite the sometimes tragic consequences of the conflicts that took place, Rabbi Schwartz makes it clear that "debate is more than a valued intellectual exercise in Judaism. In echoing the divine process of creation, it is a holy act." His introduction and overview of the tradition of "arguing for the sake of heaven" would serve as an excellent text for religious studies courses, adult education, and is an absolute must for anyone interested in moral theology or a dialogical approach to religious experience.

A Living History: Controversies that Continue to Resonate
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
The old quip has it that two Jews have three (or four) opinions. The caricature is a compliment because, as Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav averred, novel compromises and syntheses are holy, continuing the act of Creation. Respectful debate toward the common good is key to Judaism's contemporary emphasis not on morality, which has dogmatic religious intents, but on ethics, with its sociological aspects. This brief book honors 10 classic debates in Judaism during Biblical, rabbinic, and modern eras that deal with political, ethical, and spiritual matters. For instance, the very first case involves collective punishment with Abraham negotiating with God for the sake of strangers. Each case brings up current controversial situations (without providing solutions, of course). Narrow conservatism contrasts with expansive liberal reform, but compromise is also esteemed. The book is suitable for courses in ethics, political philosophy, and other curricula concerning social policy. While Jewish issues are presented, they are in essence the same as with other religions, and as I read I thought of historical parallels with Islam and even Buddhism. Still, only Judaism actually encourages debate and the consideration of alternatives. This book may be slim (104 pages) but it contains seeds for all-night discussions.

Schwartz has identified and summarized 10 of the most important and interesting turning points in Judaism. His discussions are clear and accurate. Although it is not an in-depth look at the controversies, he provides the references and a path to further study.

From the Back Cover

The church is the body of Christ--God's people.

With a clear, straightforward definition such as this, the subject of the church isn't one that most people would consider a "doctrine." For this reason, there aren't many books that deal with this crucial fundamental belief. This very readable and informative treatment of such a vital topic fills an important gap in Adventist literature.

Reinder Bruinsma's far-ranging look at the doctrine of the church moves from Old and New Testament foundations for this doctrine up through church government and on to controversial issues such as ordination and church discipline.

Fittingly, he concludes with the mission and future of the church. His fourfold approach--biblical and theological, historical, practical, and with an Adventist perspective--ensures that every facet of the doctrine is explored in detail.

This though-provoking discussion challenges those who call themselves "God's people" to examine their current understanding of the church and to prayerfully consider their roles as part of the body of Christ.
