About the Author
I.L. Peretz, 1859–1915, captured the essence of Eastern European Jewish life in his writings. Born in Poland in 1859, he eventually settled in Warsaw and became a leader of the movement within the Jewish community to establish and develop Yiddish as a modern, secular, literary language. His early work was written in Hebrew and most of his later work in Yiddish. All of his writings are imbued with a warm understanding of Jewish life.

Esther Hautzig was born in Vilna and was deported with her family to Siberia, where she lived for five years. In 1947 she immigrated to the United States. She worked for many years in publishing and in the promotion of children's books, while writing books of her own. Since 1990 she has been a full-time writer as well as a volunteer for the New York Public Library and the New York City School Volunteer Program.

This volume contains two of the best stories by one of the best short story writers

Everyone who enjoys short stories has his and her favorites. I have three: two by the Jewish Yiddish writer I. L. Peretz and one by the Christian Argentinean writer Jorge Borges. The two Peretz tales are in this volume Bontche Schweig and If Not Higher, along with eight others. The Borges tale is The Aleph.

While the Yiddish writer Shalom Aleichem, known for Fiddler on the Roof, captured the humor and pathos of the Jews living in small towns in horrible discriminatory circumstances, Peretz's stories are on the whole critical of the way people behave and mock what he saw as God's treatment of humanity.

If Not Higher is critical of the way people think. Peretz's sharp pen ridicules the piety of the town's Chassidim who foolishly and superstitiously suppose that their rabbi is so holy that during the days before the high Holidays, when the rabbi disappears from town, he goes up to heaven to intercede for the wrongs committed by his congregants. The man decides to follow the rabbi and see what he actually does during his disappearance. Does he really go to heaven and, if not, where?

Bontche Schweig, which some translators render Bontche the Silent, focuses on God. Peretz tells how the angels in heaven were embarrassed by how Bontche was treated on earth during his life. The story begins:
Here in this world, the death of Bontche made no impression on anyone at all. No one knew who Bontche was, how he lived, of what he died. No one cared whether his heart had burst, or his strength had given out, or whether he had died of hunger.
Later, the story continues:
But it was not so in the next world. There Bontche's death was known to all. The Messianic horn resounded in all the seven heavens. In paradise there was a joyous tumult: "Bontche Schweig is dead! Bontche has left the earth!"
Young angels with sparkling eyes, gold filigree wings, and silver slippers ran around joyfully and told one another: "Bontche Schweig is coming! Just imagine!"

But the angels in heaven did not understand the world as I. L. Peretz did, and with wit and skill and biting memorable irony, he makes this crystal clear in this his best story.

About the Author
James S. Angle is the Fire Chief for the Palm Harbor Fire Rescue Department in Pinellas County Florida. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member at St. Petersburg College in both the two year fire science and four year Public Safety Administration programs. Mr. Angle is a past member of the Florida Employment Standards and Training Council. He is the legislative co-chair for the Florida Fire Chiefs Association and previously served as the President of the Pinellas County Fire Chief Association. Chief Angle was named the Florida Fire Chief's Fire Chief of the year for 2010/2011.

This book should not need to be updated every other year. Technical drawing is a dying art and not much has changed. The publish date of this book is late 2008, Just over a year old from when I purchased it, yet many of the pictures were taken in the 1970's. If you must purchase this book for a class you will be able to get by with an older edition.

The content of this book however is good, the examples and project are challenging and I did learn from this book.

As the first word states in the title, the book offers a wide overview on fire behaviour. Personaly the book represented the introduction to the Heat Transfer Class during the MSc in Fire Safety Enginnering at UUJ. Providing me with the necessary fundamentals it was a great help to approch further studies of scientific papers.

The book is very well written. It is kept to a simple level for the obvious purpose of providing the student with basic undestanding of complicated issues. From my personal point of view, the simplicity and fluidity of the book are an huge advantage of the work itself, at least among all those which I have came accross.

Strongly advised for those who are approching a fire enginnering degree and also for those professional which need a mental stimulus for solving fire engineering issues. Very interesting: Ignition, Radiation, Fire Behavior, Plume Behavior and the articles collection of fire investigation at the end of the book.

Well written, understandable explanations

This book offers a well written, wide overview on fire behavior. It is kept to a simple level for the obvious purpose of providing the student with basic understanding of complicated issues. Given some complicated concepts in accurately portraying fire dynamics, it is a difficult task to make them understandable to people who don't have a PhD in Fire Engineering. This book is not only recommended for the professional fire investigators, who need a more advanced level of instruction to expand their knowledge of fire behavior, but also for the basic fire science student that wants to have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of how fire works.

lacks fundamental explinations

Being in the fire service for nearly 10 years and an instructor, this book does well for individuals with a decent level of fire knowledge. However, for the fundamental student or beginner fire fighter, this book lacks serious explinations of the basic concepts. This book has done nothing but confuse students with it's constant bombardment of calculations without providing clear explinations.

Outside sources are constantly used to supliment what this book lacks.

If it's used for a begining Fire Engineering or as a suppliment book for Fire Behavior, I would recommend it. But the lack of the fundamentals that it mystically tries to build on, is extremely frustrating and lacks any sort of foundation.

Advanced levels - I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5

An excellent collection of essays...

At 124 pages consisting of 8 essays be various experts, I found this to be a fascinating, well-written, hugely educational experience. As a general reader, I found it a natural next step to a general book such as "Jews, God, and History" by Max I. Dimont. (Dimont's book had an excellent chapter on the history of anti-semitism but is was somewhat simplistic compared to the more in depth look given in "History and Hate"). "History and Hate" is readable by general readers who have at some time in the past read books such as "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", or perhaps a book of history by Josephus and a book such as "The History of the World" by J. M. Roberts. I.e., it helps to have a general knowledge of world history to make the experience of reading "History of Hate" meaningful. I recommend "History of Hate" as an excellent book for a general reader who wants to see more of the "big picture" of anti-semitism throughout the world. Some of the essay titles are, "Anti-Semitism in the Ancient World", "Medieval Anti-Semitism", "Anti-Semitism and the Muslim World", and "American Anti-Semitism". I did not find a single "dud" and enjoyed all 8 of the essays. By contrast, I am disappointed in the book, "A ScapeGoad in the New Wilderness: The Origins and Rise of Anti-Semitism in American" by Frederic Jaher. This is a dishonest book because an unsuspecting reader ordering it sight-unseen assumes it covers history up to the present. In fact, it stops at around the year 1870. On the other side of the spectrum, I am unhappy with the book "Esau's Tears: Modern Anti-Semitism and the Rise of the Jews" by Lindemann because at 561 dense pages it is simply too long to hold the interest of a general reader. A general reader doesn't have the time for books of such a huge length, especially as to me it seems to be somewhat padded with overly flowery sentences. The bottom line is that I was able to read "History of Hate" in two days, felt I got my money's worth, was much the wiser for reading it, and was well entertained.

My kids love the songs

We sing the songs every week in our Sabbath school class and the kids remember them. Some of the songs use the same tune, to make learning a new song easy for the little ones. My mom even remembers these songs from when she was little at her Presbyterian church. They are flexible to whatever topic/theme you go with. My Kids favorite songs are "Someone special to Jesus" "In Right Out Right Happy all the time" "colorful Bubbles" "Zacchaeus was a wee little man" "Sabbath is a happy day" "If you're happy and you know it" They love to play and sing them at home. I have not personally played or read this song book. But they use it at our church and it is fantastic for our program, or if you play church at home on the piano for your kids.

About the Author
Michael Carasik, PhD is the author/translator of The Commentator's Bible: The JPS Miqra'ot Gedolot: Exodus and The Commentators' Bible: The JPS Miqra'ot Gedolot Leviticus. He teaches Biblical Hebrew at the University of Pennsylvania and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and Bible for the Me'ah program of adult Jewish learning. He received his Ph.D. in Bible and the Ancient Near East from Brandeis University, and has taught at various universities. He is the author of Theologies of the Mind in Biblical Israel and is a regular contributor of articles and reviews in scholarly journals. DO judge a book by its cover! - Cheap binding -

I won't go into the quality of the contents of this volume, I'll leave that to the scholars. If you are only interested in a review of the materials between the covers, move on, this review is not for you.

If however, you are purchasing this book both as a scholarly work and an important part of your Judaica (or any) library, read on . . .

From strictly a book manufacturing quality point of view I am disappointed. The first volume of this set- Shemot (Exodus) is bound in a rich deep embossed quality cover, mahogany brown in color. It certainly set the tone for what was to be a beautiful set when completed.

This second volume arrives in a cheap binding, startlingly and noticeably different in color (muddled red), texture and composition. Very disappointing quality variation from what is otherwise a reputable publisher. The only saving grace is that I paid only $43.00 on Amazon.com instead of the list price of $75.00.

Now I will begin reading the book to savor the wisdom of the ages contained therein.

Makes a fundamental (but difficult) text accessible to everyone

A great addition to the English text library. I recommend to anyone interested in Torah study, especially teachers -- I use it with a class of retirees who have never studied anything like it. It's a challenge, and they love it. The translation is great -- it stands alone, with no need for clumsy explanations of the Hebrew.

Etz Hayim is Excellent!!!

Etz Hayim is an excellent Torah resource. There are several reasons for this. A) English/Hebrew: The English and Hebrew transaltions are side by side and line by line. This makes it easier to do your own translating of the Hebrew text and compare it with the English translation provided. B) Two types of commentaries: Each page has two different types of commentaries underneath the Torah text. One commentary takes the text verse by verse. The other commentary gives a lot of background information and good exigetical information concerning the text. C) Essays: The essays are very good. Whether you agree with the points they are making or not, they give the reader much food for thought. Over all I have found the commentaries and essays very helpful and readable. D) The Torah is divided up into the parashot for each week. There are also special portions listed for holidays and special occaisions. After each weekly Torah portion htere is the Haftorah portion. This makes reading the entire parasha easy as it is all in one place.

About the Author
Danya Ruttenberg, Rabbi (Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, American Jewish University), is the author of Surprised By God: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Religion (Beacon Press, 2008), and editor of The Passionate Torah: Sex and Judaism (NYU Press, 2009) and Yentl's Revenge: The Next Wave of Jewish Feminism (Seal Press, 2001). She is also a contributing editor to Lilith and to the academic journal Women and Judaism, is on the editorial board of (and blogs at) Jewschool.com, and has been published in many books and periodicals over the years. Rabbi Ruttenberg, who lives in the Boston area with her husband and son, serves as the Senior Jewish Educator at Tufts University and teaches and lectures nationwide.

Elliot N. Dorff, Rabbi (Jewish Theological Seminary), PhD (Columbia University), is rector and Sol and Anne Dorff Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the American Jewish University (formerly the University of Judaism) in Los Angeles. Among the twelve books he has written are four award-winning books on Jewish ethics and law published by The Jewish Publication Society: Matters of Life and Death (1998) on Jewish medical ethics; To Do the Right and the Good (2002) on Jewish social ethics; Love Your Neighbor and Yourself on Jewish personal ethics; and For the Love of God and People: A Philosophy of Jewish Law (2007). He has also edited 10 books, including Contemporary Jewish Ethics and Morality (Oxford, 1995) and Contemporary Jewish Theology (Oxford, 1999), co-edited by Louis Newman, who also co-edited with Dorff the first three volumes of the Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices series. Since 1984, Rabbi Dorff has served on the Rabbinical Assembly's Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, and has served as its Chair since 2007. He has also served on several federal advisory commissions dealing with the ethics of health care, sexual responsibility, and research on human subjects. He is a member of the State of California's Ethics Committee on embryonic stem cell research. He is married to Marlynn, and they have four children and seven grandchildren.

Social Justice is the sixth in the series of Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices. As in the other volumes, it is arranged by case studies. Each case has a section on tradition sources, contemporary sources (an annotated bibliography), and responses by Jewish writers. The responses vary widely and include scholarly articles as well as personal essays. This volume has one case study on each of these topics: poverty and health; discrimination; the environment; and criminal justice.
The one weakness of this book is that it tries to cover too much in one volume. The other books in the series are more focused and delve into their topics more deeply. Each of the sections in this book is worthy of a volume of its own.
The series is appropriate for high school or adult education. Highly recommended.
