About the Author
Michael Katz has a B.H.L. from Gratz College and an M.A. from the Jewish theological Seminary of America, where he was ordained in 1979. Since then, he has served as rabbi of Temple Beth Torah in Westbury, New York.

Gershon Schwartz received his B.H.L. and M.A. from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he was ordained in 1979. He serves as rabbi of Beth Sholom Congregation in Elkins Park, PA.

This is an excellent book for getting more meaning out of the Torah/ Pentateuch.

The Oral Torah was handed down for generations from Moses. It is the complement to the Written Torah. Keep in mind that the original Torah was written without vowels or punctuation; the implication being that there had to be an oral Torah to understand the written one. Midrash refers to stories and details from the Oral Torah that clarify and add to stories in the Torah. The Oral Torah wasn't codified in the Talmud until about a millennium ago when anti-Semitism was so intense it appeared that the Oral Torah would be lost to posterity.

This book is presented in an easy concise format. The authors explain all of the Hebrew words that are used. The actual Biblical texts are juxtaposed with the Midrashic texts for easy comparison. Then each is followed by a D'rash, a short commentary. The root word of d'rash means to investigate. A lot of Christians tend to shy away from Jewish commentaries and such books are rarely sold in Christian books stores, even though Christians believe in the Hebrew Bible, the so called Old Testament. This is unfortunate because they are really missing out on a lot. Very few Christian ministers were able to answer my questions pertaining to the Hebrew Bible. A couple of ministers I consulted had never even heard of the story of Tamar and Judah in Genesis 38. The Jewish people are named for Judah/Yehuda.

Unimportant passages and superficial homilies

The goal of this book is laudable: to find short passages of traditional Jewish commentaries that can be explained to readers with modest religious knowledge. But the passages chosen usually offer little insight into either religion or life. Furthermore, the D'rashim seem oriented to children more than adults; they verge on the corny.

Critical Perspective

I rewrote this review because I am going through and deleting all my negative reviews. If, on the whole, I have nothing good to say about a book I say nothing. This one was on the bubble so I took another look. As a result I raised the rating one star. This is what I had to say several years ago:
I was a bit disappointed in this book which seems to take somewhat of a critical perspective of the Midrash. Their companion book on the Talmud suffers somewhat from the same general malady. In other words, the Midrash is inspirational, and inspired, stories but that is about it. That was my impression. However, in fairness to the authors this is one of the few books that even attempts to make the Midrash accessible to the average non-Yeshiva reader. Be aware though, that this book very much oversimplifies the concept and sometimes shows a shallowness of scholarly understanding. A book which I prefer is linked from here: Learning to Read Midrash is a better book for my money but certainly more challenging. Learning to Read Midrash

This is what I have to say now after having reread. Now I am not so dogmatic. I think my first review was a bit too harsh, but not too far off the mark. However, the work is fun, and takes a different approach than most books about the Midrash. I am rereading it now and would buy again. Thought provoking and entertaining.

great guide

Basically, this is The Great Controversy in comic form so that teens can understand and makes for a great soul winning tool for them. They also added the story of young Derek, who was riding a bike down the street and got into an accident with a vehicle that left him unable to play ball again ever. Hurt,frustrated and mad, he ends up at a religious revival meeting where they teach him of Jesus, early Christianity as well as the progression of the churches up until modern day. very consise,easy to read, understand and makes a great gift for the teen or young adult looking for answers..

Does not include everything it appears to claim!

Before purchasing this book, the prospective reader should compare rhetoric with content. For example; on the back cover is written; "Sunken Ships of World War II is truly one of the greatest compendiums of naval history that has ever been put together. Not only does it give an exhaustive chronology of events and actions of the United States Navy, it also contains listings of the Allies (American and English) and of the Axis (Japanese German and Italian) naval losses wherever they took place."

Oh no it isn't! Oh no it doesn't!

With respect to this author's definition of `Allies' - as far as Pacific Operations were concerned, his use of English with regard to British naval forces is over 200 years out of date when the term "English Navy" (though widely accepted, in those days, as meaning British) was formally replaced by the Royal Navy although `British Navy' is often accepted. More important than getting a name wrong, however, were all those other Allied forces such as the brave men and ships from Australia, New Zealand and even Holland (to name but some) which were also lost in the Pacific theatre of War.

If we were glad of their support at the time, we should be honoured to including mention of their existence today!

As far as the rest of the work is concerned, the detail could easily have been gleaned from any contemporary "Naval History of the World" without the need to add further detail. On the contrary, the detail is so sparse it renders the work virtually useless.

P. 97, for example lists 2 Japanese cruisers, 3 destroyers, a minesweeper and 2 submarines sunk by Spruance's forces on 17 February 1944 with a destroyer and submarine chaser sunk the following day.

Perhaps I am being too hard but, as Napoleon famously said; "An army marches on its stomach." Similarly a navy sails courtesy of its fleet of support vessels and although Admiral Spruance is mentioned, neither Operation Hailstone itself nor any of the 44 or so support ships his forces sent to the seabed at that time are included at all - not even in passing.

If this work were the only item studied about that particular attack, the reader would be left without ever having heard of Operation Hailstone and wondering why Spruance was regarded as such a hero for having sunk so few ships with such an overwhelming force of 9 carriers and 6 battleships.

I am frequently disappointed with the books I purchase but rarely more so than with this rather poor offering.

About the Author
Denis Fortin served as dean of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary from 2006 to 2013, where he currently is a professor of theology. He is an expert on Ellen White's life and work and since 1995 has shared with Jerry Moon the teaching of an influential course on issues in Ellen White studies. His previous books include Adventism in Quebec: The Dynamic of Rural Church Growth, 1830-1910. Denis and his wife, Kristine Knutson, reside in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where they raised their three children.

Jerry Moon is an expert in Adventist studies and topics related to Ellen White. His Ph.D. dissertation dealt with the interaction of W. C. White and his mother. Moon is currently the chair of the Church History Department of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. His previous books include W. C. White and Ellen G. White: The Relationship Between the Prophet and Her Son and The Trinity (with Woodrow Whidden and John Reeve). Jerry and his wife, Sue, are longtime residents of Berrien Springs, Michigan.

About the Author
Larry Jeffus is a welder with over 55 years of welding experience, and he has his own well-equipped welding shop. In his welding career he has passed many welding certification tests in a wide variety of processes, positions, and on many different material types and thicknesses. Larry has provided welding and professional consulting services locally, nationally, and internationally to major corporations, small businesses, government agencies, schools, colleges, and individuals. He is a Life Member of the American Welding Society. Larry Jeffus has over forty years experience as a dedicated classroom teacher and is the author of several Delmar Cengage Learning welding publications. Prior to retiring from teaching, Professor Jeffus taught at Eastfield College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. Since retiring from full-time teaching, he remains very active in the welding community, especially in the field of education. He serves on several welding program technical advisory committees and has visited high school, college, and technical campuses in more than forty states and four foreign countries. Professor Jeffus was selected as Outstanding Post-Secondary Technical Educator in the State of Texas by the Texas Technical Society. Professor Jeffus has served for 12 years as a board member on the Texas Workforce Investment Council in the Texas Governor's office where he works to develop a skilled workforce and bring economic development to the state. He served as a member of the Apprenticeship Project Leadership Team where he helped establish apprenticeship training programs for Texas, and he has made numerous trips to Washington lobbying for vocational and technical education. Larry Jeffus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and has completed post graduate studies.

This does do a decent job of covering the basics of tig welding as has good info in it if you have never done it before but it really, needs to be updated! Poor illustrations and print quality and lacking depth of knowledge and current information.

"The Essential Welder" is an excellent publication for the beginning to advanced welding student who wants to know what is happening at the molecular level during the GTAW and GMAW process. Can be used and understood by the average layman who has basic a understanding of the metal's physical properties up through college level engineering courses.

Rabbi Polen received his Ph.D. from Boston University and was ordained an Orthodox rabbi at the Ner Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore. He has served as a congregational rabbi for 23 years, in addition to teaching at Harvard University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Window into a remarkable world

This beautiful memoir opened a window into a world that I knew once existed, but that I had never actually seen before. We have all heard rebbe stories, have learned from the books left by these men, and have read of the lives of their followers. This, however, is a glimpse into the private lives of the aristocrats of European Hasidism. I do not use the word aristocracy lightly. The world of European Hasidism was highly stratified. The Rebbe's Daughter was top drawer. She lived in a large compound of servants, storerooms, and guest rooms for visitors to her father. There were coachmen, cooks, and governesses. There was no idle luxury. Every member of the rebbe's family lived a life of constant and devoted service. They served the Rebbe's followers, but also, and far more importantly, they served God.
Devotion to Torah pervaded every aspect and every moment of life. There is a kind of awe-filled beauty to a life in which every action, every thought is examined and consecrated to divine service. Devotion to Torah was so complete that even in the icy Polish winter the family shunned clothing made of wool. Better to shiver in silk and cotton than to risk a chance linen fiber that may render a woolen coat forbidden shatnes.

This book is an excellent introduction to electronics for any apprentice or journeyman electrician. Each chapter is clear and concise with graphic descriptions of many of the devices and practices wide spread in the industry. My experience with this book is in the classroom as a student.I learned so much from it that I decided to purchase it here at Amazon.com. Every chapter ends with practical assignments that relate to the previous chapter. I highly recommend this book. Stephen Herman is knowledgable about his subject without ever being boring.

Principles of Interactive Design

A friend of mine recommended this book (he works for NASA) and I'm glad he did. This book talks about the basic principles of design necessary to creating a good web site or multimedia design project . . . in a way understandable to us non-programmers (but my tech-head friend at NASA liked it too). One of the strengths of this book (and there are too many to list) is that the author doesn't get trapped in talking about programming. This is very unlike other books that quickly go out of date due to a focus on the technology-of-the-moment. Ms. Graham talks about how to design interactive projects in a way undoubtedly valid 30 years from now. I feel as if this book will become a classic in design books. Even better yet, this book is very informative and not a bit condescending in tone. The book was an easy read and left me with plenty to think about.
And the cover is cool and the illustrations informative and interesting. Altogether a very good book and one that will have a place on my bookshelves for decades.

These reliable references both emanate from reputable sources, one from the Jewish Publication Society and the other from the late Rosten, a prolific, best-selling author, professor, scholar, and language expert. Similar in content and format but with a differing emphasis and flavor, these books have considerable overlap. The JPS Dictionary aims to identify Jewish words and terms, derived from Yiddish, Hebrew, Aramaic, and English, that are most commonly used in U.S. daily life. Not intended to be either all-inclusive or definitive, this handy, accessible work will serve the needs of a variety of users. Arranged alphabetically, it features more than 1000 definitions using simple language and including parts of speech, pronunciation guides, one or more meanings, and cross references. Communalities are identified in the category index. The words included pertain to Jewish holidays and life-cycle events, culture, history, the Bible and other sacred texts, worship, and more. Because stress is placed on understanding Jewish traditions, this work is slightly broader in scope, covering individuals and other terms recognized by the authors as being contemporary and/or having special meaning.

Oy gevalt, a Jewish word book! How does one briefly discuss this? Technically, there is no Jewish language. Therefore, this is a cultural dictionary, and because Jewish culture is found throughout the world, Jewish words originate from many languages--Yiddish, Hebrew, Latin, German, Spanish, English, Aramaic, Arabic, French, Russian, and more.

More than 1,200 widely used words and expressions are listed in a straightforward dictionary format. Each entry contains the language of origin, phonetic pronunciation, grammatical usage, definitions (current and old-fashioned), and examples of use within appropriate contexts. Cross-references are provided for additional words used within the definitions and for words having the same or similar meanings. The authors decided to include only those words and phrases most likely to be encountered in American daily life. Therefore, the dictionary has words associated with Jewish foods, holidays, life cycles, synagogues, religious practices, customs, and traditions. Various expressions originating in "the old country" and handed down through immigrant generations, along with holiday greetings, also are found here. The only people entries are for the major scholars and historical figures directly associated with holidays.

In place of an index, category lists are found at the end of the dictionary. All words and terms listed as entries are sorted into groups such as "Bar and Bat Mitzvah," "Kabbalah," and "Keeping Kosher." This enables those who are unfamiliar with something to find related terms quickly. All in all, the Dictionary of Jewish Words is wonderful! Don't be meshugge -- buy this book!

What a fun read! If you want to know the difference between meshugge and meshuggeneh or Miriam's Cup and Miriam's Well, this is the book for you. Eisenberg and Scolnic have compiled a wonderfully ecclectic collection of Jewish terms, references, and culture in an easy-to-read and easy-to-find format. The entries have pronunciation guidelines, and are cleverly used in sentences that truly convey their meaning. This work is a must-add to any bookshelf.

Great reference for Conservative and Reform Judaism

Orthodoxy and rabbinical scholars almost assuredly will be familiar with most of these terms. The authors freely admit that they compiled the terms from their own upbringings - "modern, American, liberal, matriarchal, and from Conservative and Reform backgrounds." Thus, many of the rituals discussed are from that perspective.
For instance, a minyan is a gathering of ten men, the minimum required for a religious service. In this text in this book, the word "people" is substituted for men, but the bottom of the entry explains that traditionally that number only referred to men.
For those who grew up without a Jewish background or for those whose knowledge of general Jewish vocabulary is lax, this is a wonderfully written book. The words are arranged alphabetically. A dictionary of Jewish words could include potentially hundreds, if not thousands of pages, so the authors narrowed down the scope to include words that one might hear in daily life in the USA. The words are drawn from Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish, and Ladino. It would be ideal for non-Jews who simply want to figure out some of the words in conversations that their Jewish friends use!
Since all words have to be transliterated, different spellings with Latin letters are cross-referenced to the entry which tells where the definition will be given. This is invaluable since many words in the USA are spelled a variety of ways, such as Chanukah, Hanukah, Hannukkah, and Hanukkah.
The definitions are clear and concise. Words used in definitions which are bold-faced are also entries in the dictionary.
What many may find especially helpful is the category lists in the back of the book. For instance, there are lists for objects found in a synagogue, for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, the Jewish calendar, food, Pesach, and many more.
"The Jewish Word Book," by Sidney J. Jacobs, published in 1982, contains more entries. However, I prefer this book by the JPS because the words are explained more in-depth with many examples of words given. Unless one is extremely well-versed in Judaism, this book is very helpful without seeming overwhelming.

Outstanding!

This book is a great resource. As a Christian family in a predominantly Jewish community, we often felt a little confused by some of the words that would come up in conversation. I was always jealous of the colorful traditions and wonderful words that had been passed down to my friends throughout the generations. Now I know where to go for help. We were invited to a seder last year, and found our new knowledge made the experience much more meaningful.
