Ellen Frankel is the CEO and editor-in-chief of The Jewish Publication Society. A scholar of Jewish midrash and folklore, Frankel has published eight books, including The Classic Tales: 4000 Years of Jewish Lore; The Encyclopedia of Jewish Symbols; The Five Books of Miriam: A Woman's Commentary on the Torah; The Jewish Spirit; and The Illustrated Hebrew Bible. Frankel travels widely as a storyteller and lecturer.

Avi Katz was born in Philadelphia and moved to Israel at age 20, where he graduated from the Bezalel Art Academy. He has been the illustrator of the Jerusalem Report since its first issue in 1990, and is active in the Cartooning for Peace program. He has illustrated over 150 books in Israel and the U.S. and has received the IBBY Hans Christian Andersen Honors (four times) and Israel's Ze'ev Prize (eight times).

Adressing the bad review....

This is a review purely in response to Keri Mom of 4. I am writing this because I do not want a bad review to stop anyone from buying a great book that can ignite a child's imagination, and knowledge regarding the Torah.

I was worried about this review, the last thing I need is a sexualized rendition of the Bible for my children! But so many have endorsed this book, from the right or more conservative side, plus I have always trusted JPS in the past. I decided to get it any way. The first thing I did, before allowing my children to see it was to check out pages 50-51, Jacob's dream. I am sure that, with 100% assertiveness, their are NO female, NOR nude, figures in this section nor any suggestions of it. All that can be made of the genderless, iridescent and transparent figures, are that they are sitting, and the outlines of heads and arms. I have a degree in Art History, and one in Religious Studies, and was a Religious School Teacher, so I have a very good eye for these things. Perhaps the reviewer means to address another book. In fact, as I go through this book all depictions of angels, or messengers, or supper human beings, are completely cloaked, shown, from behind, and obscured. Also everyone is dressed fairly modestly and covered for the time period, even the Egyptians and Romans. It's most controversial image is that of Samson bare chested and in a loin cloth. I can not fully speak on written content because I have not read it all yet, but what I have read is perfect in length, style, and content to be read by or to a young person. Also of course the pictures should be fine for anyone who is interested in an Illustrated Children's Bible of the Old Testament. I have found that a child as young as three can be engaged by this book.

My daughter actually begged me to buy this book for her after the author visited our synagogue. I ordered it, and was so glad I did. The stories are perfectly written for my 9 year old, and I find her reading it quite often.

A great foundation

The best Bible for Children that I've seen.
The stories are the perfect length for bedtime and wonderful to read for young children.
The pictures help the younger child visualize the story.
I wish that the language had been a bit less stilted; however, that is a matter of interpretation.
A great foundation on which to start biblical discussions with your children.

Fallen Angels: Soldiers of Satan's Realm

An enjoyable account of the origins and evolution of the concept of fallen angels in Jewish and Christian world views for a general audience. Bamberger starts with a brief introductory discussion of those few passages from the Tanakh (Old Testament) which are often referenced in later writings on Satan or fallen angels. But the book really gets started with those writings that Bamberger calls the "outside books." That is the books outside the canonical tradition-the Enoch writings, the Adam books, and various testaments and apocalypses. Bamberger then discusses the separate and distinct traditions that developed in Judaism and Christianity from the periods of the Talmud and the New Testament through the middle ages to contemporary theology. Contemporary, that is to the late 1940s when this book was written. Throughout the book, Bamberger is especially interested in contrasting the dualistic views of some of the outside books, the Zohar, and Christian theology which saw the Cosmos divided between warring camps of good and evil with the traditional Jewish view that sees Satan as an agent of an unopposed and unopposable God. It's unfortunate that Bamberger did not have access to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The extreme dualism of the Dead Sea Sect would have been an interesting addition to this study. I did find this book to be good preparation for approaching the duelist teachings of the Dead Sea Sect. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is the contrast between Jewish and Christian approaches to similar concepts. I have often heard people speak of the Judeo-Christian concept of Satan. This book makes clear that there is no such thing. If you're interested in the dark side of Jewish and Christian mythology, this is a book you will want to read.

Great Haggadah

Nice translation. Using Lord instead of Hashem. Uses masculine when proper translation calls for it, but not when it doesn't (e.g., 4 children). No mealy-mouthed stuff regarding Pour out your wrath. Nothing skipped. No distracting cartoons.

Very nice commentary below the text of the Haggadah, plus real insightful essays at the back. Just what you would expect from the extremely close reading that Rabbi Silber brings to Biblical and other Jewish texts.

Printed on nice paper too.

We were classmates with David Silber at Yeshiva University's High School, College and Rabbinical School. We studied Talmud together as chavrusas in High School in the shiur of Rabbi Gershon Yankelewitz (who is now 100 years old, may he live to 120). Silber went on the found the remarkable Drisha Institute on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and has spent his career in Torah education.

Rabbi Silber is an Orthodox Jewish scholar of major significance with the broad and deep knowledge of a first rate Talmid Chacham. While in high school, we recall that he placed among the highest finalists in the world Bible contest. Silber knew the entire Tanakh by heart and could cite it with great facility on any topic. He is known now as an expert in the entire range of Jewish learning and as a master teacher of our tradition.

Silber's book appeared in time for Passover last year, A Passover Haggadah: Go Forth and Learn. His collaborator in writing this book is Rachel Furst, an accomplished scholar and teacher in her own right. Although we single out Rabbi Silber here, all of our comments and compliments ought to be allocated between both authors.

This is a volume of great erudition and careful learning. Silber derives his insights from a range of sources including the work of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, but not limited by that influence. Silber's writings show an originality of theological insight that is deeply rooted in the classical texts and sources and informed by a wide ranging knowledge of the liberal arts.

The essays are works of pedagogic mastery. Silber has taught this material for decades and over time has highly refined his presentations. He balances his use of previous scholarly sources between the rabbinic and the academic and arrives often at original insights that are compelling. Thus, the essays in this volume are parts of the book that will be cited by many who seek fresh and modern angles of vision into the old and established contents of the Tanakh and rabbinic writings.

Silber's comments in this book's Haggadah-text-section are substantial, original and faithful to the rabbinic record. Interspersed here are not just nuggets of interpretation, but also coherent essays and excurses on topics brought to the Seder table by the Haggadah text.

The book authentically amplifies the strong and weak aspects of the Haggadah itself. The Haggadah book is a complex composite of liturgy, learning and rituals. It's notable that we call the occasion on which we read and enact the book the "Seder" as that implies order and organization. Indeed the Haggadah is the one rabbinic book that comes with its own embedded table of contents - a listing of the fifteen Seder sections.

Yet organization with a list of contents does not imply a tight coherence to a set theme. The Haggadah ranges widely and richly across the landscape of Israelite and rabbinic history and ritual. It hops often without warning from one mode of expression and rite to another and from one crucial topic in Jewish religious life and thought to another.

Silber and Furst enrich this winding and even dizzying Haggadah-journey that we embark on each year with the expertise of seasoned and expert scouts. At the end of the trip with this marvelous guide book we can safely say that these pathfinders took us on a great adventure with deep and keen perceptions into every stop along the way.

A worthy companion for the Evening.

The books are good. There is only one volume, but the English-formatted, i.e. read front to back, is a series of small monograph discussions of the first 100 pages or so with some general exploration of themes and could be more tightly edited, but has much of use. The second half, Hebrew-Formatted, i.e. read from Back to front is a mixed English and Hebrew Haggadah that is nicely illustrated and has good fonts for both Hebrew and English text and is quite usable with its own areas of exposition by annotated text.
The work is well worth the price.

For the uninitiated in Passover, the Seder means order, as in the order of the setting and its components.
It does not mean the order of its clarity of reasoning.
Much of a Passover evening is devoted, ideally at least, to contemplation of the underlying meaning of Symbols, texts quoted in the Seder and what logical unity there is to the whole.
The purpose of the prayers, questions, songs, accoutrements and the meal are often discussed at length and to no complete conclusion. This is reasonable as a full conclusion has yet to be reached in 2000 years that everybody (at least those interested in the business) can agree to. Multiple works out there have various takes on the course of the evening's events and all have some seeming validity. Often the points of views and the conclusions can be quite contrary.
A favorite part is the 4 Questions: "Why is this night different from all other nights"
There are answers to be had which employs a good part of the evening. This is a major focus of quite varied theses. I can count out some 45-50 discrete ones that I have read thus far.
The nature of annotations and the stated explanations, at least in this as in much of Commentaries available for Mishnah or Talmud, are subjective. There is ultimately no single correct answer or even manner of thought and there is an advantage to having many similar works to peruse to understand the complexity of what is a Seder.
This work is a worthy member to join many others of its ilk.

Do you want to be challenged?

The book starts slow and I wondered where he was going with it,
but it was worth the wait. I highly recommend you buy it if you
want to be challenged to live on a higher spiritual plane.
If it wasn't for the slow start I would give this book 5 stars.
I'm on my last chapter and plan to read it through again
immediately!

This book is the answer to so many of my questions about sin and changing my life from the world loving sinner to a Christ-filled person.
Honestly I thought I had made that transition, but I see clearly now that Christ has so much more in mind for me!
I thought I would be battling/living with sin forever and that it was expected while I lived in a sin filled world. But now I see diiferently!
I especially love how the author uses stories from the Bible to help me understand the Transformation that Christ is bringing me through.
I see so much more clearly now that I was really missing out on before, and I have been a christian for many years!
The book is not hard to read... But definately gives you much to think about! I would have normally sped through it but it has such good "food" in it, I have to chew slowly and savor each page!
I also recommend the workbook!!!

The Spirituality of a Genius

While the formatting of this book suggests it is self-published (typos, etc.), there is no doubt of the sincerity of the author and his passion to present more of the Einstein legacy of humility. Jung scholars will note there are comments on the relationship between these two great men. Adds to the wealth of the spirituality of this great genius.

An interesting account about discussions between Albert Einstein and William Hermanns.

Einstein and the Poet in Search of the Cosmic Man, written by author Hermanns, centers on discussions with Albert Einstein. The discussions range from a time before World War II and afterwards. Einstein and Hermanns also discuss a range of topics. But at the risk of revealing too much about the content of this book, I will say no more about that.

The cover design has the photo of Einstein predominately shown and rightfully so in this reader’s opinion. Since this book centers on the author’s discussions with Einstein, it seems only right to have a cover like this.

In addition, the character development in this book reflects development in the sense that the two men – Hermanns and Einstein – are highlighted during their discussions. Personally, what made this so interesting was a written account by a man, Hermanns, who had the opportunity to meet and speak with Einstein during a number of occasions through the years.

The plot structure of this book also centers on the discussions between Hermanns and Einstein. The structure makes sense to this reader, because the book is organized by the four discussions between the two men along with a dedication at the very beginning as well as a Postlude and an Epilogue after the fourth discussion.

However, the editing of this book at times had grammatical mistakes. Another set of eyes looking at the book before publishing may have been helpful in this reader’s opinion.

Overall, I would rate Einstein and the Poet in Search of the Cosmic Man 4 out of 5 stars for the reasons already explained above.

Unfortunately only one of five dialogue discussions between Rabindinath Tagore were included. Tagore a Bengali language poet and Einstein both did not like the translaions of these dialogues, as the book points out. Still the only source known to me now in English for even this one important dialogue.

Helen C. Botnarescue, PhD, is a Professor Emeritus at the California State University. She currently chairs the Heritage Committee of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), the International Committee for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE), and co-chairs the Retired Members' Committee of OMEP. She is a three-time president of the California ACEI, and has served twice as a Region 10 representative to NAECTE. Helen is a regular contributor to several publications including Childhood Education, the ACEI journal The Activist, and Our Heritage Today, two of the newsletters of ACEI. Dr. Botnarescue mentors new teachers and advises the principal of her church school and regularly tutors children for the Redwood City Elementary School District.

An ABC Practicum Guide For Students and Teachers

Threw out the chapters there are detailed teaching aspects. I have learned personal values, I planned activities and got to act them out and it taught me to teach and learn but also have fun. How to work with children with disabilities. It talks about the Laws in childhood. It helps us get the parents involved show them how to help there child with home visits. It covers Montessori, and Reggio Emillia and other teachers who have influenced teachers threw out the centuries.
I am a student in early childhood and this book has been a valuable tool. Threw out the chapters there are detailed teaching aspects. Chapter 2 Placement- First Days on the Teaching Team. This chapter helped me when I started my practicum. I knew to go and get familiar with the center and teacher so I good feel more at ease. I learned to take something to do with the children. I have learned personal values, I planned activities and got to act them out and it taught me to teach and learn but also have fun. I can set up a classroom, and put things in order to locality. I learned to plan weekly and monthly activity schedules and to plan them around the seasons and holidays. I learned why Erikson theory works and why we follow his stages of development. You will read about Maslow and Burton White. You will learn to listen to the children and parents and each other. It teaches you how to solve simple and complex problems. How to work with children with disabilities. It shows you how to observe and be observed. It talks about the Laws in childhood. The does and don'ts and passing the Licensing. It talks about quality programs and how to keep them that way. It helps us get the parents involved show them how to help there child with home visits. It covers Montessori, and Reggio Emillia and other teachers who have influenced teachers threw out the centuries. It talks about the teacher shortage and how we need to pull together and work hard to be who we want to be. Over this entire book is a wonderful tool to help you grow and start a wonderful career in Childhood profession. I recommend keeping this book a reference guide for future use.

Neoapocalyptic repackaging of traditional 1844 theology

There is a great deal to commend and recommend in this book, not only in Gospel content but in amazing candor and information. Dr. Knight begins on p. 11 with a warning that "if Adventism loses its apocalyptic vision, it has lost its reason for existing as either a church or as a system of education. ... If Seventh-day Adventist institutions are Christian only in the sense that they have Jesus and the evangelical gospel, then any good evangelical school will do." On p. 15- he states plainly: "...Adventism has to a large extent lost the apocalyptic foundation of its message." On pp 19-20 he says, "Adventism became strong by proclaiming that it had a prophetic message for our time. And it is that message repackaged for the twenty-first century that will give Adventism strength both in the present and the future. On the other hand, if we discover that Adventism does not have something unique and valuable to offer, lets be honest, fold up our tents, and find something useful to do with our lives. Adventism cannot escape the dilemma between being meaningful or being neutered. It can't have both. ... Modern Adventism, whether we like it or not, is firmly rooted in the apocalyptic visions of Daniel and Revelation." Very commendable candor, Dr. Knight!

Such honest candor and objectivity is refreshing and sorely needed in the present acute "identity crisis" in Adventism. But how Dr. Knight proposes to "repackage" that "prophetic message" (in his last chapter he calls it "neoapocalyptic") is "where the rubber meets the road." Commendably, Dr. Knight throughout uses a Christ-centered, Gospel-oriented approach. And He makes some amazing admissions of errors, both personal and corporate, that sometimes seem as though he is bareing his heart and soul in a public repentance sitting in sack cloth and ashes. Yet there is both honest repentance and retrenchment, sometimes almost to the point of leaving the reader in a state of shizophrenia or what Jesus in the Gospels calls "double-mindedness." There are numerous attempts to mix the New Wine with the Old, and patch the old "traditions of the elders" with the new whole cloth of the Gospel, which Jesus said is impossible. In this sense, Dr. Knight is attempting the impossible, and ends up with a "synthesis neoapocalyptic theology" than simply does not work and cannot work, for he is attempting to essentially reconfirm the disconfirmed.

In this unusual little book, written in his well-deserved retirement, Dr. Knight is commendably far more candid than ever before(retirees often feel freer to speak their minds). But unfortunately, his amazing candor is also coupled with a subtle but fallacious "repackaged" neoapocalyptic apologia for the traditional SDA 1844 time-setting theology that time and history have disconfirmed and that no "neoapocalyptic repackaging" can reconfirm, even with Dr. Knight's historical and theological acumen.

A timely warning

In this short but thoughtful book, George Knight argues that Adventism is in the process of de-emphasising its historic apocalyptic message and mission, and that if it does, it will become irrelevant and wither away.

He notes that the mainline Protestant denominations traded their historic Christian beliefs for a mess of modernist pottage, and since the 1960s have been shrinking, in some cases dramatically. He notes that many younger Adventist pastors not only do not highly value the Church's historic apocalyptic message, they are not even very familiar with it. If we abandon our apocalyptic message, however, Adventism will neuter itself and become essentially irrelevant.

Knight has some problems with the way some Adventist evangelists have presented the Church's apocalyptic message--in a way that is not Christ-centered--which he calls "beastly preaching." But he argues that the basic structure is sound. Specifically, even though the historical method of prophetic interpretation has been abandoned, in favor of preterism and futurism, by virtually everyone except Adventists, the historical method is dictated by the second chapter of Daniel, and the rest of Daniel, as well as Revelation, follows from that template. Likewise, the day/year principle is grounded in the 70 weeks prophecy that predicts the Messiah's appearance and death, and cannot be overthrown without deranging the entire prophetic structure.

Knight argues that the Adventist interpretation of 1844, the sanctuary, and the investigative judgment are sound, except that Adventists bizarrely have used the doctrine as an occasion for legalism, when in reality it centers around and celebrates the sufficiency of Christ's merits on our behalf. He notes that Adventists have become ensared with arguing about chronology and about furniture in the heavenly sanctuary, to the point of losing sight of the larger truths. Knight even argues that the traditional Adventist interpretation of the three angels messages--as calling out the Sabbath truth--is sound.

So Knight has no real problem with the structure of Adventist prophetic interpretation, except that it has often failed to be Christ-centered, and hence has given our detractors the opportunity to argue that we are a cult and not true evangelical Christians.

Perhaps the real significance of this work is not so much what is being said, but who is saying it. Knight is something of a liberal, or least certainly not a conservative, so if he is concerned that the church is losing its way with regard to its historic mission, that is an alarm bell that must be taken very seriously.

If I have a criticism, it is that in Chapter 4, Knight commits the same mistake that has rendered so much Adventist apocalyptic preaching so annoying, namely, plugging in a pet theory on why the crisis is upon us. In Knight's case, he mentions Paul Erlich's "Population Bomb", Jared Diamond's "Collapse", and the spectre of "global warming." That is the type of alarmism that appeals to political liberals, but political conservatives like myself just deride that nonsense. Knight's mention of the "Population Bomb" is particularly brave in light of (1) his book's title and chief metaphor, and (2) the fact that America's birth rate is just barely at replacement level and many European countries' birth rates are plunging far below replacement level. One of our most serious problems will soon be the lack of people, not their overabundance, especially in light of social welfare systems in all the developed nations that are set up like Ponzi schemes.

An interesting and well-written exploration of the core of Adventism. Knight's work is a must read, whether simply learning about Adventists or exploring one's identity as an Adventist. His timely, pointed reflections challenge this generation of Adventists to be balanced, humble, Bible-based Christians, all the while comfortable teaching and preaching an eschatology that the greater portion of Christendom has either abandoned or never heard of.
