Comprehensive guide for Understanding Children's Literature

This textbook is extremely pratical as a guide to learning about the various types of children's books. It gives excellent insights on Picture books, novels, biographies/autobiographies, historical fiction, traditional fiction, realistic fiction and poetry, and multicultural children's literature, just to name a few. This book is well constructed, in that its chapters are very short, yet packed with very important and interesting content. This book also a large listing award winning books (i.e caldecott winners, Newberry winners, Coretta Scott King winners) from every genre that is mentioned.
This book would be extremely practical for librarians, school teachers, and professors who are teaching children's literature courses.

The JPS classic reissue of a Jewish masterpiece, reset in two volumes with all new indexes To this day Legends of the Jews remains a most remarkable and comprehensive compilation of stories connected to the Hebrew Bible. It is an indispensable reference on that body of literature known as Midrash, the imaginative retelling and elaboration on Bible stories in which mythological tales about demons and magic co-exist with moralistic stories about the piety of the patriarchs. Legends is the first book to which one turns to learn about the postbiblical understanding of a biblical episode, or to discover the source for biblical legends that cannot be traced directly to the Bible. It is also the first place to find the answers to such questions as: on what day was Abraham born; what was Moses' physical appearance, or what was the name of Potiphar’s wife.

Launched in 1901 by The Jewish Publication Society, the original project began as a single volume of 1,000 pages but grew much larger by 1938, when the seventh volume containing the indexes was finally published. Louis Ginzberg was 28 years old when Henrietta Szold, secretary of the Society, prepared the contract for what was conceived as a small, popular volume on Jewish legends. As the scion of two distinguished rabbinical families, Ginzberg studied in the great Lithuanian yeshivot of Telz and Slobodka. Later he received his secular education at Strassburg and Heidelberg universities. This combination of religious and secular learning enabled him to pursue with great passion the wide-ranging roots of Jewish legend. Ginzberg believed that Jewish legend was both earlier and greater than what was represented in the Talmud and midrashic collections—the primary Rabbinic sources. And so he scoured Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and Oriental sources to rediscover the fine threads of Jewish legend. The result was a masterpiece: a single, coherent collection of legends that follows the biblical narrative, accompanied by detailed notes that reveal a complex subtext of often intersecting and multi-layered levels of influence, borrowed notions, and interpretive commentaries.

Four new indexes and a new introduction by David Stern, Professor of Postbiblical and Medieval Hebrew Literature, and Director of the Jewish Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania, complete the reissue of one of the greatest classics of modern Jewish literature.

About the Author
Louis Ginzberg was born in Kovno (now Kaunas), Lithuania, in 1873. He began his university studies in mathematics but eventually turned to the study of religion. His doctoral dissertation, which documented the survival of various Jewish elaborations of the Bible in the writings of the Church Fathers, prefigured his later work. He immigrated to America in 1899 and became a renowned Judaic scholar. He died in New York City in 1953.

Stern is a professor of postbiblical and medieval Hebrew literature at the University of Pennsylvania.

Awesome! Couldn't put it down.

If you are a lover of Jewish history, Christian history, and are open minded enough to listen to legends and glean possible truth from ancient spoken tradition that has been finally gathered into one resource for us to read, then this book will be amazing to you. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

Do Not Buy This Edition!

This Edition is messed up I just got it expecting Vol 1 (Becuase thats what the cover says) But the inside pages are Vol 2!! Total waste of money for me becuase I needed Vol I. Buy a diffrent edition. I would have given no stars if I could have.

Not impressed with this version of the hymnal. I bought it for the sheet music, but the pages are so thin and it's difficult to read because the other side of the page is clearly visible. Also, it comes in two parts which make opening and closing the book quite awkward. The printing is also very poor and the music score is not centred on the page - the ends of the bars are cut off by the perforations on the page. The hymns are, of course, lovely but sadly let down by the extremely poor printing job.

This version of The Song of Songs is a beautiful coffee-table book that is both illustrated and has commentary. All though there are wonderful and fuller translations of The Songs, most notably by Drs. Ariel and Chana Bloch, but Dr. Band preferred to use the widely available J.P.S. version.

The Book is divided into two sections. Part 1-has pastel designs of several of Middle Eastern décor and abstract montage. Below are the translations the J.P.S. and very slight variations with annotated, Talmudic commentaries.

The strength of this book is in large part for its aesthetic value. If there is a negative side, it would be that she opted to take a safe translation and pretty it up. With The Bloch's wonderful translation (1995), it would have been over-the-top in terms of standing out of the crowd. Such a book would invite discussions on deeper levels of intimacy, youth, external pressures, class struggle-essentially, what does Songs says to and about the existential in contemporary society.

Part 2-is a beautiful reproduction of the poem in Hebrew.

Overall, this book should be in the homes of die-hard romantics.

With her fine calligraphy and original artwork, Debra Band presents the gracefully advanced argument that both perceptions of this remarkable Hebraic poem is to be taken literally and allegorically, sensuously and spiritually. Each of the 65 full-page illuminations and beautifully crafted papercut reproductions draws upon classic rabbinic text and modern scholarship, and is accompanied by images along with the Bible text in its original Hebrew. Of special note is the informed and informative foreword written by Raymond P. Scheindlin, a renowned scholar of medieval Hebrew literature at The Jewish Theological Seminary. Exquisitely beautiful

I ordered this because someone sent me one of Band's other books (Arise! Arise!). Clearly Band has a great gift to share. The descriptions cannot begin to do justice to the beauty of this book. The commentary, both written and visual, is engrossing, It is interesting to have more than a single translation. I have been drawn into this text for the first time because of this beautiful presentation. If you are considering getting this...you may well be drawn in too!

Young has unearthed more than 100 letters by American poet Emma Lazarus that, tucked into this biographical study, shed new light on her activities and personality. Best remembered for her sonnet ``The New Colossus,'' engraved on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, Lazarus (1849-1887) was an ardent spokesperson for eastern European Jews fleeing anti-Semitism in czarist Russia. She founded a society to help Jewish exiles resettle in Palestine and advocated a Jewish homeland in Palestine 13 years before Theodor Herzl coined the term Zionism. Nevertheless, the wealthy, genteel Sephardic poet and essayist--assimilated and never fully comfortable with her Judaism--based her concept of Jewish renewal on a return to an idealized biblical past. Previous biographers have portrayed a reclusive spinster who suddenly became pro-Semitic at the age of 33, but these intimate, gossipy letters reveal a vital woman who actively participated in cultural life, meeting in Europe with Henry James, Matthew Arnold, Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. Freelance writer Young shows that Lazarus's reclamation of her Jewishness was an evolutionary process, as reflected in her earliest writings. Photos.

Emma Lazarus is best known for her immortal sonnet to the Statue of Liberty, "The New Colossus". She has also been mythologized as a brilliant but reclusive spinster. Now, author Bette Roth Young has discovered over 100 original letters that shed new light on this legendary figure. In Emma's own words, and the words of her friends, they describe the social life and the personality of a vital young woman who traveled widely here and abroad.

About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and has also spent two years as a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Prof. Young's career has centered entirely around undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a co-author with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. With their deaths, he assumed full responsibility for new editions of these books until joined by Prof. Freedman for "University Physics." Prof. Young is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Prof. Young and his wife Alice usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah. Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Freedman was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles, and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. He came to UCSB in 1981 after three years teaching and doing research at the University of Washington. At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intendedfor highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has helped to develop computer-based tools for learning introductory physics and astronomy. When not in the classroom or slaving over a computer, Dr. Freedman can be found either flying (he holds a commercial pilot's license) or driving with his wife, Caroline, in their 1960 Nash Metropolitan convertible. A. Lewis Ford is Professor of Physics at Texas A&M University. He received a B.A. from Rice University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. After a one-year postdoc at Harvard University, he joined the Texas A&M physics faculty in 1973 and has been there ever since. Professor Ford's research area is theoretical atomic physics, with a specialization in atomic collisions. At Texas A&M he has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, but primarily introductory physics.

With the exception of her sonnet, The New Colossus", which is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, the work of Emma Lazarus is almost unknown today. In her short life, Lazarus produced an impressive body of poetry, translations, and plays. In particular she wrote poems on Jewish themes, on pogroms in Europe, and on an incipient Zionism. She is the first significant Jewish-American poet and is still, I believe, one of the most important.
Ms Roth-Young's book is divided into two sections, the first consisting of a biography of Emma Lazarus the second consisting of a selection of her letters discovered and published for the first time by the author. Roth-Young has a knowledge of and affection for her subject. Roth-Young attacks views of Ms Lazarus that had been advaced by earlier writers, creating what she describes as a "myth". The "myth" sees Emma Lazarus as a reclusive spinster who discovered her Jewish roots in the early 1880 and changed from a late-Victorian poet with traditional late romantic themes to an ardent poet of Judaism.
Because the work and life of Emma Lazarus are so little known, the critique of earlier writers appears overdone. A straightforward narrative might have been more effective. Roth-Young's portrait, and the letters, show, indeed a cosmopolitan, highly social Emma Lazarus who travelled twice to Europe in the final years of her life (1885-1887) and appeared more concerned with European culture and art than with recovering her Jewish past. It remains questionable, however, whether this is the whole story of a life or whether it is as inconsistent with earlier readings of Lazarus's life as Roth-Young believes it is.
Lazarus described herself as a recluse; she was sensitive about her unmarried state. A large and varied correspondence does not rebut this self-perception. The book points to ambivalences in Lazarus's attitute towards Judaism, and this is useful in understanding her work.
The book also could have used a fuller discussion of Emma azarus's poetry because, as Roth-Young is aware, it is virtually forgotten today. The forward to the book by Frances Klagsburn suggests that Emma Lazarus's poetry was largely conventional and derivative and that her Jewish poetry suffers from a certain lack of distance and personal involvement. There is not sufficient discussion of the poetry in the book to convince the reader that this is true. My own reading of this poetry is that it is a thoughtful and important predecessor of the liberal Judaism of our own day with much to teach us sbout the value of non-fundamentalist religion in a secular world.
This book is a good introduction to Emma Lazarus who, I think, deserves the status Ms Roth-Young thinks she already has as something of an American icon due to her association with the Statue of Liberty. I hope it will encourage the interested reader to search out the works of this too little known American poet.

An especially good Bible commentary

Nahum Sarna, the general editor of the JPS Commentary series, who passed away just recently, was one of the greatest biblical scholars of the twntieth century and the mentor of many other scholars. He had a keen mind, was extraordinarily friendly to everyone, and was greatly admired. It was a pleasure to talk and learn from him.

Sarna offers his readers a great deal of information in this volume. Besides commentaries on every verse which draws from close to a hundred ancient and modern sources, Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and non-religious, he introduces each section with a brief scholarly and interesting summary, over fifty in all. He also includes some three dozen excurses on such subjects as angeology, the meaning of the akeda, the moral issue of Jacob's behavior, and the name Israel.

Examples of his commentaries include comparing the opening of Genesis with the Mesopotamian Emuna Elish, which shows that the initial verse should be translated "When God began to create heaven and earth." The Hebrew word for "God," Elohim, is not a personal name, but a general Hebrew word for deity and can refer to pagan gods. God's first creation, light, serves as a symbol of life, joy, justice, and deliverance. This light, independant of the sun, became the subject of many rabbinic comments.

Useful, Illuminating Commentary

I first encountered this series in seminary (Presbyterian). I very much appreciate the layout: Hebrew text and English translation at the top (upper 1/4 to 1/3 of the page), with verse by verse commentary at the bottom of the page. Sarna includes several excursuses (excursi?) at the end of the volume. Sarna seems to employ the historical-critical method in his interpretation, while at the same time offering some speculative reflections upon the psychological states of the patriarchs and other figures of Genesis. As with any commentary, each reader will have to make his or her own decisions as to the helpfulness and insightfulness of the interpretation. I find many of the comments helpful. Coming at the text from a Christian perspective, I especially appreciate Sarna's Jewish perspective on the text. For readers not used to Hebrew, it may be helpful to note that the commentary, like the Hebrew Bible, reads from right to left ("backwards" for people used to reading left to right).

Fantastic Commentary That Should Be Added To Your Library

I love this commentary. I teach Sunday School in a Methodist Church. I love the Jewish exegetical style of study but, since I don't read Hebrew, I have had trouble finding something I could understand. This is geared toward the English reader and is very detailed. Each verse is broken down and gets at least a page of commentary.It's understandable and helps me understand the nuances of the Hebrew language that I just don't get reading the Bible in English. I highly recommend.
