"Menachem Elon" served as a justice on the Israeli Supreme court from 1977 to 1993 and its deputy president 1988-1993. He has been a guest lecturer at Oxford University, University College of London, and visiting professor at Harvard University's law school. In 1993 he was elected president of the World Union of Jewish Studies and he is a member of the Hauser Global Law School Program at New York University School of Law. He has been the head of the Jewish Law Institute of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

One of the Best modern Jewish books out there

This is an unbelievably comprehensive book of jewish morals and virtues taken from an exremely wide range of Jewish sources. What is most amazing is the way it is written -- conversational, modern and applicable to life today while still being true to ancient sources and texts. This is a must read and a must have for every Jewish home. It is one of Borowitz's best and a nice maiden voyage for new author Frances Weinman Schwartz, whom we hope to hear more from.

A nice general guide to Jewish values, though sometimes a little too general to hold my interest (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). I recommend reading this along with (and preferably before) Telushkin's Book of Jewish Values- this book gives you the forest of general concepts, Telushkin gives you the trees (by applying these concepts to the specific details of every day life).

The Importance of Being Earnest marks a central moment in late-Victorian literature, not only for its wit but also for its role in the shift from a Victorian to a Modern consciousness. The play began its career as a biting satire directed at the very audience who received it so delightedly, but ended its initial run as a harbinger of Wilde’s personal downfall when his lover’s father, who would later bring about Wilde’s arrest and imprisonment, attempted to disrupt the production.

Smacked Down!

Dr. Gladden provides tremendous insight not only into Oscar Wilde's life as the ultimate dandiacal Victorian writer but also into the Victorians as a people, culture, and era in British history. This book bridges the gap between Wilde's life and his work, making those otherwise imperceptible connections available and accessible to any reader interested in literature, history, drama, or any combination of the three. This book represents the manifestation of true scholarship at its finest.

General Books Problem...Not the book

I ordered this for my daughters birthday and Amazon delivered right on her birthday. My daughter is a huge Oscar Wilde fan! Unfortunately, the book was full of garbage text. It was printed by General Books the day I ordered it. I then requested a replacement. Once again, it was printed the day I made my request and it contained the exact garbage text that the original order contained. Here is an example of the garbage text that this book contained...(Jk*he$. HeL*) This was all throughout the book. Then half the book looked like some bizarre glossary that didn't even belong to this book. The entire book was worthless both times and I requested a refund. I can't give a proper review on the book as it was unreadable!

Clever Word Play

Oscar Wilde was at the peak of his play writing abilities when he penned "The Importance of Being Earnest". It was a peak that was to be cut short by the sensational trial that sent him to jail for two years because of homosexual actions. While one does not need to know Wilde's background to enjoy the play, some insight into what certain words might have meant in Victorian slang certainly put a different twist on the play. In the "The Importance of Being Earnest" Wilde uses humor to turn conventional relationships and staid Victorian morality on its head.

The play centers around two men, Jack and Algernon. Jack wants to propose to Algernon's cousin Gwendolen, but her mother does not think him an eligible bachelor. Not to mention the fact that Gwendolen believes Jack to be named Ernest and that there is a whole slew of things he has keep hidden from her. Algernon tells Jack that he is a Bunburyist, for he pretends to have a brother so he can come up to the city (that would be Ernest) while Algernon pretends to have an invalid friend named Bunbury so that he can escape to the country. When Gwendolen asks Jack for his country address, Algernon overhears and heads out to Jack's house, pretending to be his brother Ernest, so that he can meet Jack's ward, Cecily. The two fall in love, for Cecily always wanted to marry someone named Ernest. This is all to Jack's chagrin when he arrives on the scene and finds he must confess the truth to Gwendolen. Yet the convoluted plot has a way of working out for the best of everyone involved.

"The Importance of Being Earnest" is an extremely thin plotted play, which allows Wilde's witticisms and humor to shine through. Throughout there is a strand of anti-marriage jokes and unexpected reversals of the expected sayings. There are so many one-liners from this play that have been quoted through the ages which testifies to what a wonderful way Wilde had with words. It is a play that stands the test of time with its laugh-out-loud moments and witty zingers.

Eugene B. Borowitz is Sigmund L. Falk Distinguished Professor of Education and Jewish Religious Thought at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, where he has taught since 1962. Ray C. Mullin is a former electrical instructor for the Wisconsin Schools of Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education. Prior to his retirement, he served as district manager, regional manager, regional vice president, and ultimately director technical liaison for a major electrical manufacturer. He also served on the NFPA Code Making Panel 4 of the National Electrical Code. A former journeyman and supervisor for residential, commercial, and industrial installations, he has taught electrical apprentice and journeyman courses, conducted numerous technical and Code seminars, written many articles for electrical trade publications, and consulted for electrical equipment manufacturers on legal issues. A former member of the Executive Board of the Western Section of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and National Fire Protection Association, Electrical Section. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Colorado State University.

This book has made a straight forward topic unnecessarily confusing and time consuming. There's lots of information that's organized well. It’s a great reference guide for any electrical work that you plan to do. It also will give practice examples, including a practice and example blue print. Also test quiz at the end of each chapter. All you need in one book.

An Amazing Book!

I have the Black & Decker Complete Guide to Home Wiring but it was published in 2002. I saw the new third edition was published in 2005. I like the Black & Decker Complete Guide Books because they have amazing illustrations. They educate you just enough for you to realize that you need a much better book. I wanted an extremely comprehensive book that included the new 2008 national electrical code. My search led me to this book.
This is a text book. A different reviewer wrote that this was not a reference book. I disagree. The purpose of a text book is to thoroughly educate a novice on a specific topic. This book is extremely informative. I purchased the paperback edition. This book is well worth the money. This is the book that you want to buy. Your search is over.

Great Book for Electrical Projects

I have recently completed rewiring a cabin and a old house in the Twin Cities area. My projects were probably a little more complex than some as they involved installing new service entrances and new panels. More importantly they involved getting an electrical permit, which meant visits from the local electrical inspector. For this reason I did a lot of reading. One of the books I read was the this book. I really liked it because of the detailed code information many books left out or assumed you already knew. Written as a textbook for students in the electrical trade it covers things like outlet spacing, number of circuits required in a kitchen, size of conductors for service entrances, box fill violations ect. The great thing about Mullin's approach is he covers a house room by room with what the code requires with references. The actual National Electrical Code is not well organized and you would spend a lot of time trying to find what you need. By applying Mullin's book to my work, all of my projects passed inspection the first time around! I agree with other reviewers that it does not cover some wiring skills things like fishing wires through old houses or how to wire an outlet or switch. For this reason, I have three other suggestions:

"Wiring a House" by Rex Cauldwell. This was a good book for learning how to plan out the wiring for my projects, it has excellent photographs and how to information. I especially like his "above code" suggestions for making your wiring more useful and safer.

Another suggestion is the Black and Decker Wiring book, it is very good at showing the basics of wiring and has good color photographs. I think it is much better than the Home Depot book.

There is also a handy little book (and cheap!) called "Step by Step Guidebook on Home Wiring Diagrams" by Ray McReynolds. It is a small orange book I found at Home Depot and have seen at other home improvement stores. This book is not flashy and is easily overlooked or dismissed, it just has black and white drawings of wiring diagrams for just about every wiring situation a homeowner could get into, like three way and 4 way switches, outlets, lights ect. This book also shows different ways to wire all these devices, such as when the power comes in at the switch or comes in at the light ect.

The bottom line, if you are doing any complex wiring in your home and want to be code compliant this is a good book for you. If you are just looking for how to wire switches and outlets, buy the Black and Decker book and the little home wiring diagram book. Happy Wiring!

A clear and inspirational expression of God's powerful love.

Originally written to assist in the daily devotions of senior youth, the value of this book is certainly not limited for persons well beyond their teens. I'm 63 years of age and have used this book several years over the past twelve as a part of my daily devotions. Without question, no such book I have ever used expresses God's love for us as does this one. The author covers virtually every concern of the human heart that cries out for God's healing love. Each day's reading flows smoothly and somehow makes you look just a little deeper into your own feelings, and understand just a little bit more about God's loving nature. If daily devotion books could make the best seller lists, this one would be right up there, and the world would be a better place for it!

Easy to see; easy to read.

The giant print edition makes reading easy on the eyes while The Clear Word makes scripture easy on the brain. Language changes over the years. Why shouldn't scripture keep up with it?

This is a Bible tool every home should have on it's library shelf. I personally prefer the NKJV Bible. After I read from it, this book makes what I read in the NKJV come alive somehow in a whole new light. It's in the simplicity and flow of it's words put in a no nonsense, easily understandable format. It's as easy as reading and understanding a children's book. Shouldn't that be the way every passage in the "so-called" modern language Bibles do? If we can understand it more clearly, we grasp it's intention and meaning and can better apply it to our lives as Christians. That's what The Clear Word does, and the giant print makes it even easier to see & read.

It makes reading my Bible more enjoyable. I love it!

Truly a Spiritual Devotional

I purchase devotional books every year to enhance my personal devotional time. This book is truly an amazing blessing. I am learning so much about the life of Jesus and seeing it from so many different perspectives. That of Mary, Joseph, Herod and so many others. The author is a wealth of knowledge and has a truly inspirational way of writing so anyone can understand. It was definitely a good buy.

This is a daily devotional book following the life of Christ from before Creation to His Second Coming.
I chose this because I have read other books by the author and found them to be very meaningful
spiritually. So far, this book surpasses my expectations.
