Jack Erjavec has become a fixture in the automotive textbook publishing world. He has decades of experience as a technician, educator, author, and editor, and has authored or co-authored more than 30 automotive textbooks and training manuals. Erjavec holds a master's degree in vocational and technical education from Ohio State University, and he spent twenty years at Columbus State Community College as an instructor and administrator. A long-time affiliate of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers, he also served as executive vice-president for the organization and spent several years on its board of directors. Erjavec is also associated with ATMC, SAE, ASA, ATRA, AERA, and other automotive professional associations.

Robert Scharff, a technical writer since 1946, is the author of over 300 books.

This well-written, comprehensive book contains an incredible amount of information about the workings of automobiles. The text is very readable, and it presumes no previous knowledge about automobiles or mechanics. Chapters on tools and basic electronics theory will appeal to beginners, while their subsequent chapters build on this knowledge and get quite in-depth.
The fact that the book does not focus on specific makes and models makes it all the more valuable. Descriptions of the various automotive systems typically begin with a very broad overview, followed by a description of the various different types or subsystems available, and ultimately proceed to a great level of detail. This approach makes it very easy to understand the purpose of each system as a whole, without having to get into more technical details. Of course, if the reader chooses to proceed, very in-depth details are available and are presented just as clearly. The book is thoroughly and clearly illustrated. To cap it off, numerous photo sequences show technicians performing many of the procedures which are described in the text.
I have successfully used this title as as a "how-to" book when working on my own car. Even if you do not work on your own automobile, however, you will find it useful to consult to help you understand just what your car (or mechanic) is trying to tell you. It is also useful to consult when considering the purchase of a new vehicle. Plain vanilla, easy to read old testament.

I wanted to find an easy to read, large print old testament bible and this one is just that. No fancy gold edges to the pages, no fancy cover, just nice large print in a book size that's easy to hold. The book is reasonably priced and was quickly shipped. I was very satisfied with this transaction. I feel like I was on the receiving end of the Golden Rule, it was done unto me as I would like it done. :-)

It's the Bible

I grew up Christian or sorts but ended up atheist (what a surprise). I am not an expert on theology but out of sheer interest I decided to read a few religious texts word for word to see what I missed. I heard the JPS translation is where to go for the Hebrew Bible (the JPS translations are often referenced by official Jewish organisations in Israel).

This translation is very easy to understand and not in any way like KJV or similar versions. Nor is this whitewashed in any way when it comes to 'violent' parts.

I would suggest if you can get a larger version to do so. The paperback can be very difficult to hold open when you are not near the middle, especially when you are closer to the end of the text.

Great Book for the beginner and novice. I learned a lot from this one. It explains step by step the procedures from preparing and choosing the right grinding wheel to dressing contours. The author did a good job explaining, in an easy to understand text, what it takes from the basics to the actual grinding procedure. Well worth buying!!

I was hoping for a more readable and popularly interesting book, but it was like reading a senior thesis paper on Filene's. Not even one illustration was included to show the family or the store. I was very disappointed in this book and cannot recommend it.

a book on the greatest

i enjoyed this book so much.especially about unreleased material.michael jackson is the greatest artist ever.he has done it all and still he gets no love.it will take another 50-100 years for folks to know how great this artist is&was.i bought both books by the author and was impressed with her knowledge and detail of the subject.i hope she writes a third.

read this after the MJ: Magic & Madness

After MJ's death, I borrowed this book from the library and is impressed by its red cover with a drawing of MJ, which is unique among the many MJ books.

MJ: the Magic & Madness, another MJ biography is, to me, trying to be objective. This book, however, is probably an authorised version of biography. The author is always defending for MJ. In a certain year, for example, Mcdonna earned more than MJ and the author gave a long explanation on this. The wording and tone of the lines were always on the side of MJ. So don't let this be your first book on MJ or you cannot decide which is right and wrong. Having said that I notice there are a few points in it where the author was pointing out the dark side of the King, and these points were used, if not copied, in the book : MJ - Magic & Madness. For example, when a reporter from Times visited his home and was accidentally led by Joe Jackson to MJ's room without prior notice, MJ was found with a man/boy, watching TV.

However biased, I recommend fans to read this. There is not much ups and downs, but you will remain very calm when you read the book. During the period covered by the book it was MJ's peak! You will find MJ receiving endless awards and honours throughout the pages, and with details of his speeches, jokes in the moment of MJ getting the awards. And in the web you can watch these magic moments. How interesting it is to watch all the ceremony scenes in the web with this book.

And there is also a very detailed depiction of the performance for the Bad tour. The font is big. The book is not heavy. I like this book and recommend you to read it.

Loved this book!

Loved this book. Love Lisa Campbell. She wrote this book during the 80s (her second one during the Chandler mess) so there is a lot of detail that you don't get when you read books that cover MJ's whole life. She's a fan and her insights are fascinating. It is enjoyable and a relief to read a book that is factual and also positive about Michael without being afraid that at some point, the shoe is going to drop. I tried to locate her after reading both of her books (the last information I cld find, she was in MI) but was unsuccessful. I wanted to thank her. Her research was impeccable and her loyalty to MJ was a joy.

In our post-9/11 world, Americans find themselves thinking more and more about war and national security. Yet as Jews, we know from our religious texts as well as our textbooks, that Israel has considered these topics from ancient times. With centuries of antagonistic relations with neighboring countries comes centuries of ethical debate on how one should deal with neighbors. Elliot Dorff, co-editor of the first 4 volumes of Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices, and Danya Ruttenberg, esteemed author, editor and senior Jewish educator at Tufts University Hillel, have edited an academic work valuable to both academic as well as synagogue libraries.
In War and National Security, as in previous works, four case studies are presented to the readers. And, as in past volumes, these case studies are tweaked in a manner to make the reader question their original assumptions. A beautifully done example of this is the case study on the conduct of war. How does a young individual conduct himself /herself in an ethically charged situation... if the commanding officer directs them to break into militants' homes? If the commanding officer directs them to bomb a school? Torture and rape?

The Tanakh, an edition of the Holy Scriptures of Judaism, put out by the Jewish Publication Society (JPS), is not simply a new translation of the Christian Old Testament. Indeed, most Christian readers would be surprised at the differences inherent in the Tanakh.
The word Tanakh consists of the first letters of the words denoting the three sections of the text: the Torah (the Law), consisting of the first five books; the Nevi'im (the Prophets), which includes major and minor prophets, as well as some of the history books; and the Kethuvim (the Writings), which consists of poetry, wisdom literature, stories and eschatological literature, and some further history books.
The first thing that strikes the reader more familiar with a Bible a la King James Version, is the the ordering of the books.
The intent behind the differing order demonstrates one of the key differences in focus of Judaism and Christianity. The ordering of the Old Testament, with the minor prophets, and their call to repentance and future deliverance of the people of Israel by God, is anticipatory of the Messianic age, and hence provide a `run-up' to the New Testament. Obviously, Judaism does not have the same focus toward Jesus. Thus, the conclusion of the Tanakh leads to the return from exile, the restoration of the people of Israel to the land of promise, and the return of the worship of God to the appointed place, the Temple.
The Tanakh was originally translated and published in three sections, corresponding to the three divisions of the text. Begun in 1955, The Torah was completed in 1962; then there was a wait until The Nevi'im was released in 1978, and The Kethuvim in 1982. This edition of the Tanakh is the compilation of these efforts by JPS, with revisions, especially of the 1962 Torah translation.
This is a reader's edition, not a scholar's edition. It is not heavily annotated, but there are markings and notes where translation difficulties and issues arose, for the attentive to pursue. The translators relied upon Hebrew editions, Aramaic targums, the Septuagint (a Greek translation), and were informed by subsequent translations, both Christian and Jewish. However, this edition has a translation and scholarly integrity all its own. The translations are careful in accuracy and beautiful in poetry, prose, and literary merit.
Minor differences include the shifting of some chapter and verse demarcations. Contrary to popular belief, the original text was not broken into chapters and verses. This division is neither ancient nor Jewish, but rather a medieval Christian copyist convention. Admittedly, it is almost inconceivable to have a Bible without chapters and verses, but the reader should be aware that these are not integral and infallible. There are instances where this edition combines and re-lines the divisions to make more sense; for instance, the verses of Genesis 7.24 and 8.1 have been joined to make a more fluid and consistent narrative.
I was honoured to have a Jewish friend read from this JPS edition a passage from I Samuel during my ordination. Her reading was magnificent. I think that it is very important in Biblical studies to utilise this text (among others) whenever doing research into the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament to gain a greater understanding of a text that is shared between different communities.

A new experience...

I bought the Tanakh solely because it was the version required for an Old Testament class at a Christian Seminary I attend. I didn't know what to expect initially, because I had never heard of it before.
I must say I really enjoy the translation. It is the first time since the translation of the LXX that a large group of Jewish scholars have come together to translate the Jewish sacred texts. It was nice to read a Bible that was free of Christian influence, even though I am a Christian in faith. The translation is based on the traditional Masoretic text, but it uses the LXX and the Dead Sea scrolls when the Masoretic text is obscure. There are also scriptural readings for various feasts and holy days.
Overall, I find the translation readable and scholarly. As a Christian, I always have more "Christianized" versions around too, such as the RSV, REB, and NRSV, but it is important to have other scholarly translational perspectives as well. I do wish there would have been maps and some commentary included in the hardcover...perhaps in a future edition.
As a side note, the paperback version has a few typos in the text that the hardback lacks.

Amazon and Kindle, please make sure your digital books have been properly edited. Case in point in this version of the Tanakh; There are ten cases where the word 'cat' is used in lieu of 'eat' and two instances where 'eves' is used instead of 'eyes' and 3 instances of 'diat' instead of 'that.'

It is not enough to scan these books. Someone needs to edit them, too.

An illuminating journey, written with care and scholarship. Highly recommended.

Having studied the story of Leah and Rachel in Torah class, I thought Mr. Rabow's book might be of interest. It was far more! The Torah study felt like snorkeling- stay on the surface, dive down for some additional insight, then surface again and go on. Reading "The Lost Matriarch" was like scuba diving- go deep, stay as long as you like, and gather wisdom fromTalmud and Mishnah. The story as told by Mr. Rabow was illuminating as it opened up the wonders of the Talmud.

Revealing the Personal Leah

this is a tender, beautifully written story of an almost forgotten woman who played an essential role in the history of the Jewish people as depicted in the Bible. What is so helpful to the reader's desire to know more about the Biblical Leah is the author's search through the Talmud for all the embellishments, speculations and wisdom of the Jewish sages as they filled in the vacuum left open by the Bible's brief references to her. But what I found particularly satisfying is the author's own views of how this woman, by virtue of how she followed her own values, is largely an overlooked heroine in the epic of the Jewish people.

I enjoyed reading The Lost Matriarch. Leah had always been just an afterthought to me. In fact, I felt sorry for her, seeing her as the unloved wife, daughter, sister. After reading the book, I see how important she is, how she is deserving of being one of the matriarchs and a moral role model.

There are enough character flaws and good points to go around among all the players in this story. The triangle between Jacob, Rachel and Leah plus Laban the girls’ father is tricky to tease apart and one I wouldn’t want to live in my own life!

I also learned so much about the Midrashic process. I’ve been to many, many Torah study sessions and presented analyses on Shabbat mornings in small groups myself, but I never immersed myself in the process for a full book. The writing was clear, concise, literate but not academic or dense.

I was amazed at the way Jerry could gather in all the research and arrange it in a structure that flowed so well.

Yes, I call him Jerry because – full disclosure – we attend the same synagogue. I met him a few months ago and we worked on a short project together. When his book came out I thought it was the friendly thing to do to buy it and read it. I hoped it would be at least ok so I could comment gently but truthfully to a new friend.

Thankfully Jerry writes well, is attentive to women’s issues given the time period of the story and is knowledgeable and quite the researcher. He was able to explain the story on both the literal and metaphorical levels.

If you want to take one story from the Torah/Bible and work your way through it in a doable fashion with an average size book, I recommend The Lost Matriarch. I considered giving it 4 stars to show I wasn’t being partial to a friend. But it was well done and shortchanging a book because you know the writer wouldn’t be fair either. Enjoy.
