Psalms for Dummies, courtesy of the Jewish Publication Society

This paperback pocket version of the Book of Psalms is all in English and without a letter of Hebrew anywhere. I love it for that reason, for its clarity and especially its usefulness in teaching Gentiles--who can read it for themselves in its proper form. The translations are pitch-perfect (following the Masoretic text yet footnoted as to errors/unknown words), and there is no interlinear translation migraine waiting for the reader.
A lot of the nest minds worked on this Tehillim for may years. These experts were able to look at each word, word by word, and come up with the ones that had uncertain meanings and the ones that had no meaning for us today at all. The scholars duly footnote these words, and leave it more or less up to the reader to interpret the words. It is a beautiful book, well formatted, with the verses numbered as it ought to be and the Psalms, when possible, taking up only one page each--and the font is a miracle of clarity in this modern world of blurry, undersized fonts.
I doubt this has bearing here, and doubt it is even done anymore, but I have two copies of this with a blue cover and one copy with an oddly salmon pink color--I assume they are intended as a hint that these make wonderful bar mitzvah/bat mitzvah gifts, which they do. However, in this listing I see a relatively new design blue cover. When I bought mine, I cared little about the color of the cover. The Psalms are what matter than the quality of the book. This book has it all and you need look no further for your "go-to" Tehillim.
I have a special, personal history with this edition of the Tehillim. I had searched for years until I found this one. Prior to that there was no individually published book of Psalms in English ... maybe in Hebrew which I can barely read. I loved this so much I bought three copies to keep around the house. When I became deathly ill in 2009, my wife read to me from this Book of Psalms. That copy from which she read to me we keep in a sacred place of honor, and sometimes I even hesitate to read it, choosing one of the other copies instead. And at this price you ought to buy several, if nothing else to give them as gifts!
The JPS gives US a great gift: a pocket-sized Book of Psalms that I defy you to find anyplace else at this price and of this quality. Get this; it will be your best traveling companion and comfort at home! It is work like this little book, and its terrific publishing company, that makes one really want to shout, "L'Chaim!!!" I wish to add that it is well worth perusing the Jewish Publication Society website for the books they sell; I think you can still sign up to receive their published book catalogue in the mail.
Anything by the JPS has my vote and my custom. I own several of their TORAH and TANAKH, including a pocket-sized Tanakh that is a joy to take to the medical appointments I have to suffer.

and it's nice to have an English translation of Hebrew Tehillim

Although this is technically a "pocket version" the pages are thicker than typical bible pages and as a result would be somewhat awkward to really carry around in a pocket (maybe a coat pocket). Convenient for a backpack and/or travel, though, and it's nice to have an English translation of Hebrew Tehillim.

Just what I was searching for!

I have searched everywhere for a pocket size book of ONLY Psalms that wasn't in Hebrew or transliterated. Perfect size for carrying around and in modern English. Great for prayers on the go or if you just want a classic read. It's a must buy.
