About the Author
Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, British India, to British parents who had met and married in England two years earlier. Kipling spent his early years in India but was sent to England for his education. In October 1882, he arrived back in India not yet 17 and, lacking the money to continue his education, got a job working for newspapers such as the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore and The Pioneer in Allahabad. He wrote a huge number of stories and articles during ten years of working for newspapers. In 1888, he published his first book, “Plain Tales from the Hills” published in Calcutta in January 1888, which consisted of 40 short stories he had written for the newspapers. He published and sold several other stories the same year, one of which was this story “The Man Who Would Be King”, which became one of his most famous. On 9 March 1889, Kipling left India, traveling first to San Francisco via Rangoon, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. He then traveled across the United States and Canada, meeting Mark Twain in Elmira, New York. After that, he traveled to Liverpool England, then to India again, then back to England where he married, then went to Brattleboro, Vermont, then to Japan, then back to Brattleboro, Vermont, where his first child was born in December 1892 and he settled down to writing his Jungle Books. Kipling became a Freemason in about 1885, before the usual minimum age of 21. Freemasonry plays an important role in several of his works especially in “The Man Who Would Be King” where he discovers that the High Priest of Kafirstan is a Freemasons too!!! After four years in Battleboro, he returned to England due to a dispute with his brother-in-law. He then went to South Africa where he spent some years before returning to England. During all his life until his death in England on 18 January 1936 at age 70, Kipling kept writing and publishing. He left a huge volume of work. For example, more than 50 unpublished poems by Kipling were released for the first time in March 2013.

a simple story

It's a simple story about a couple of drifters. People are inventing all this subtext that it's pro-imperialism or anti-imperialism and that's rubbish. It's a simple story about life. Some of the wording is confusing, since it's local English slang. Other than that, it isn't brilliant or anything, but rather fond and above average.

Eh? What? Sorry, can't hear you over the violins!

(The Audible Edition) The audio version is 25 minutes long. The MUSIC in the first half of the audio drowns out Kipling's story. It's as if the narrator was standing directly in front of an orchestra. Fortunately, the music's absent entirely in the second half. [ A relatively rare example of someone somewhere not giving a d%mn about the audio edition at all.]

Kipling's story, however, what you can hear of it, is excellent. The two British adventurers in Afghanistan have a tale worth listening to.

It's a good thing the U.S. never had to fight this guy

This is a classic, first published in Russian in 1965. "The End of the Third Reich" is the British title. This book was published in the U.S. in 1968 as "The Fall of Berlin". The book is out of print but you can still occasionally find them through one of the online auction houses. I paid $12 for my copy.
Chuikov's tale of the endgame of WWII in Europe is a fascinating contrast to his first book, "The Battle for Stalingrad". This book begins with Chuikov's 8th Guards Army fending off a German counterattack at the Dniester River and ends with the final surrender of the Germans in Berlin. By this time, Chuikov and his 8th Guards have become the "go-to" guys for the Soviet Army. Having proven themselves in Stalingrad, they know in advance that they have been selected for the final storming of Berlin.
Chuikov reveals himself to be a fascinating character - keenly observant and insightful about both military tactics and human nature, honest to the point of bluntness, personally courageous under fire, and intolerant of fools, cowards, and military stupidity. He is also a diehard Communist, and more than capable of sucking up to the right people (like Nikita Khrushchov, who he first met at Stalingrad).
Chuikov's 8th Guards are called upon to undertake a wide range of difficult assignments, ranging all the way from the savage guerilla style defense of Stalingrad, blitzkrieg attacks on the German defensive line at the Bug River, storming the fortress at Kustrin (another Soviet General had made the mistake of incorrectly reporting to Moscow that the fortress had already been taken when it had only been bypassed - Chuikov the trusty go-to guy was called upon to bail everybody out of this embarrassing dilemma), and then finally the "honor" of storming Berlin.
It is worth noting that while street to street fighting is a virtual anathema to most of the Western world's military, here in this book, Chuikov describes an outline of how it is to be done correctly. In essence, Chuikov gives leeway for planning the attacks on individual buildings and streets to small groups of soldiers, the storm groups, and lets them decide on the proper usage of artillery and tanks, making sure that his soldiers have plenty of both. The storm groups were always led by veteran and proven soldiers. It is interesting to contrast this approach to the top-heavy approach of the Germans at Stalingrad, and how the Germans never figured out how to use their troops, tanks, and artillery as well as the Russians. A great deal of Chuikov's success, it becomes clear, came from his ability to select and surround himself with subordinates who could carry out his orders while acting and thinking independently.
Of course, Chuikov does not mention in this book the heavy casualties that his 8th Guards suffered or about the rape and pillaging by Soviet soldiers in the conquered German territories. Or about the tens of thousands of Russian soldiers who were executed so that the rest would fight bravely.
Chuikov wrote the book, it seems, primarily to counter the impression left by the memoirs of the defeated German generals, that the Soviets won only because of superior numbers of men and weapons. Indeed, the Soviets did have an overwhelming advantage, but military quality also counted - it still took someone with the brains to figure out how to get the job done. And, Vasili Chuikov, field commander of the 8th Guards Army, and later the Supreme Commander of Soviet Land Forces, got the job done for the Soviets in World War II.

About the Author
Michael V. Fox received his rabbinical ordination from Hebrew Union College. He received a Ph.D. in Bible, Semitics, and Egyptology from the Hebrew University. He is currently Halls-Bascom Professor of Hebrew at the University of Wisconsin.

Excellent basic introduction to a difficult book of the Bible

Fox's brief commentary is a fine introduction to Ecclesiastes for the educated non-specialist who wants to get a grip on this fascinating and sometimes frustrating book. He accurately and concisely presents the consensus of modern scholarship on Ecclesiastes -- that it is a fairly late production as books of the Bible go and that it is a series of philosophical reflections, not a systematic work of philosophy.

Surprisingly and to his credit, Fox also gives a fair and unbiased presentation of the views of traditional Jewish commentators -- although he makes clear that he does not necessarily endorse these views as representing the true meaning of the text. Fox's commentary would not be favored by an absolute traditionalist of any religious background, i.e. by someone who is convinced that King Solomon was the author of Ecclesiastes and that the purpose of Ecclesiastes is to teach moral lessons.

I found it interesting, in an official "Jewish Publication Society" commentary, that Fox so often dissents in his commentary from the JPS translation that he gives alongside the Hebrew text. At least once, I was inclined to take the side of the JPS translator against Fox, but in all cases, the comparison of the two approaches was enlightening.

In a couple of places, I found Fox's discussion of a difficult Hebrew passage to be too cursory. I would have enjoyed being able to choose among a half dozen approaches. I do recognize that space was limited and that Fox was trying to write a basic introduction, not delve into the scholarly literature.

A must have for Ecclesiastes

I am currently going through a sermon series on the book of Ecclesiastes, and for my sermon prep I have found no more helpful book than this one. In the introduction, it lists all of the most important Hebrew words and talks about what they mean in their context. I still use blueletterbible in conjunction with these word studies, but I have found that Fox's comments are usually right on.

Warning: This is NOT the kind of commentary that you should buy if you want somebody to do all the application work for you. This book merely focuses on what Qohelet is actually trying to say. If you're looking for "8 great sermon ideas on the book of Ecclesiastes," look elsewhere. If you are looking for something that is simply focused on finding the original meaning of the book, then there is no better commentary out there.

Not What I Expected

Given Fox's previous writing on Ecclesiastes, as well as the content of other volumes of the JPS series, I expected a fully detailed scholarly commentary. But this is a very abbreviated analysis of Ecclesiastes. That's not a bad thing, just not what I had anticipated and what what I have experienced in this series. The commentary section was well under 100 pages. I'm sure I might have enjoyed Fox, as I usually do, but I returned the book and bought another title.

FOR THE READER OF THE PSALMS IN ENGLISH ONLY THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL WORK

I first ordered from Amazon The Book of Psalms in the Schottenstein edition ISBN 1-57819-558-6 as I was looking for an edition in English and Hebrew, with a hard cover, with good paper that would give me good service for many future years. I liked the idea of an interlinear text with the English translation of each Hebrew word under each Hebrew character, but unlike the interlinear Greek-English New Testament Nestle/Marshall, published by Bagster 1958, the Schottenstein edition does not have an English translation on the side, or underneath, similar to the King James' translation of the Greek. This edition by Schottenstein is wonderful for someone with a reasonable knowledge of Hebrew who can basically read it so that it can be appreciated both academically and/or interiorize it with spiritual effect. I regret that I have no understanding of Hebrew,and could not find in the mere translation of the characters anything that satisfied my need for the language and poetry of the original on which to support my spiritual needs -

A Guide to 3,000 Bible Figures -- Written in a Style That's Great for Small Groups

All sorts of studies of Americans' Bible-reading habits show that, if you're a Bible reader, you probably own a wide range of Bibles -- and most likely you've got reference works on your shelf as well. You've probably got a one-volume scholarly guide to scriptures and, most likely, a couple of other helpful reference books, too.

So, why buy this one? Let's be honest, your shelves already are groaning with biblical material -- and you may even feel guilty that you don't consult these books more regularly.

Well, this is something handy, fresh and amazingly comprehensive. I didn't personally count all the entries in this big, thick paperback book -- and I'll trust the estimate in the book that you'll find 3,000 figures from the Jewish Bible between these covers. (The Jewish Bible is roughly that collection of scriptures Christians would call the Old Testament -- although Christian Bibles vary by tradition on which books they contain with Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox readers holding three different lists of books within their Bibles.)

David Mandel apparently spent many years on this epic work. It certainly took a whale of a lot of research to organize this so wonderfully.

But here's what makes this book shine: Mandel writes so clearly and so compellingly about these 3,000 folks -- that it's actually fun to read the entries. If you've looked as many "Who's Who ..." and other reference works as I have over the years, you'll know what I'm talking about. Mandel writes in a tone that a good teacher of a Bible-study group might use in describing a biblical character to the rest of the group.

It's reasonably priced and -- what's more -- it comes with the imprint of the Jewish Publication Society, which means there's considerable scholarly consensus behind the value of this book.

It also makes a great gift for someone you know who simply enjoys reading the Bible -- and would enjoy a handy guide to flip open and "read an overview," when a strange new name comes along.

All characters great and small

This is a great reference book - informative, comprehensive, scholarly -and (a huge plus) written in an easy and engaging style. It well deserves having been declared an "Outstanding rated title for the year 2008" by the University Press Committee.

Whether the reader believes that the Bible is sacred or only sees it as literature he will enjoy learning not only about the great figures but the lesser known biblical characters as well.

The author gathers together, in each entry, all the information in the Bible about that particular person. He has produced a coherent and continuous narration.

This book is a must for any home.

The facts only.

This book is informative and comprehensive. I like the fact that it only has the Bible text as its source, withouth extra-biblical stories, theological interpretations or other additions. It reads like a book of short stories, full of fascinating characters.

I would highly recommend it not only to scholars, students, and religious institutions, but also to general readers, as it combines enjoyment with information.

I would recommend it as an indispensable reference book for scholars

I would hardly call these people masters

First let me say that I had previously written a more positive review of this book; however, I may have been a little over zealous.
I asked Amazon.com to remove my review as I no longer felt the way I did about the book. Many months later I see my review still on the board, so I have taken the time to write a more accurate review of this book.
Now to the review:
The book has a good section on the Fit Deformation command of the lofting component. The model that you make (a woman's high heeled shoe) is a good practical model for learning the Fit Deformation command and the other features that go along with the lofting component. A pretty good section on animating a hopping kangaroo, however...
In the tutorial that shows you how to model and animate a kangaroo, the author clearly states that the boolean function may not work when modeling the kangaroo. She's right! I never got it to work. Boolean functions are indeed tricky, but to put a tutorial that is clearly going to have a difficult time performing a boolean function shows extreme short sightedness. As a seasoned 3DSR4 user, I had the patience to try this boolean over a dozen times before I gave up. I cannot imagine new users truly understanding the usefulness of the boolean function if it doesn't work in a tutorial.
Half the book is made up of one tutorial in which half of that tutorial is composed of programming. Most 3D artists are artists, not programers. I don't mind learning some scripting but the tutorial they provide (which is pretty neat, by the way) is way too long and complicated.
In sum, they should get rid of the kangaroo tutorial and the space buggy tutorial.

I learned a little, but the book's out of date.

This book, written ages ago for MAX 1.2, doesn't do the job now that MAX is up to v2.5. While I did learn a few interesting tricks, for the most part I was dissapointed. Several tutorials contained blatant errors or would not work as explained. Most of what you learn here, you learn by fixing the author's errors or figuring out the things he forgot to tell you. Add to that the fact that it's out of date, and it adds up to a definite last resort resource book.

Good book to start with and come back to!

Ever have one of those days when you made one thing go REALLY well? Well that was the day I picked up this book. It is simple to read, teaches the basics without talking down to you, and you get a nice model of a kangaroo to boot. It compares to a textbook but reads like a novel. I could not put it down until it was done and then I found I knew how Max works. When R2 came out I went back to this book for inspiration and even then it taught me something new! Get it, it's very good. And the price is not bad, either.

Seventytwo days later, the body was found in the woods next to a roadway, a short distance from Lindbergh’s house. In 1927, Lindbergh was the first to fly the Atlantic. By 1932, he was perhaps the most famous man alive. A great hero, he was allowed to be the chief architect of the investiga-tion into his son’s kidnapping. In this capacity, the first thing he did was to have the body cremated without an autopsy. Was this done on purpose? Or, was it done for emotional reasons? Case Closed: Lindy did it.

As a 25+ year law enforcement veteran, and current homicide detective (and NO, I was not involved in the O.J. investigation) my first impression upon hearing of this book and its premise, was to dismiss it out of hand. After all, I had read most everything else about the Lindbergh case and there had never been a hint that the kidnap was anything but real. Then I read the book. It's true, the book is not exceedingly well written but these two guys are not professional journalists. What I sensed as I read was the presence of a fellow dogged police investigator (Monier) and, what I have begrugingly come to admire over the years: the skeptical mind of the criminal defense lawyer (Ahlgren). In tandem, their approach to sleuthing an old case is deadly. As I proceeded through the book all the crazy facts of the case which had never seemed to make sense to anyone, and which had provided much of the lure to the Lindbergh case, suddenly seemed to fall into place. The authors show in Lindbergh himself those personality traits which, in my own experience, are consistent with a parent who commits a terrible crime, and then concocts a cover-up. Did Lindy in fact do it? The authors are honest enough to conceed that Lindy as culprit is only one of many scenarios, although one that has previosly been overlooked by the journalists and other amateurs who have studied this case. For me, in my own experience, I'd say it's the most likely explanation.

A sixty-six year old hoax finally revealed. Spellbinding!

This book should have been a best-seller. Contrary to first impressions, it does NOT belong in the genre of "conspiracy theory books." In my opinion, it is just the opposite - an unconspiracy book. It unravels a conspiracy theory - one that has been with us for over 65 years and took the life of an innocent man. I have read all the books on Hauptmann, Lindbergh and the Morrows that I can find. But,I continually re-read Crime of the Century: The Lindbergh Kidnapping Hoax by Stephen Monier and Gregory Ahlgren because the theories proposed in their riveting account of their own modern-day re-investigation of that sensatonal case are so shockingly plausible! The reader comes away asking "Why didn't anyone think of this before?!" In fact, their theories make all of the loose jig-saw-puzzle pieces, which journalistic investigators like Anthony Scaduto "Scapegoat" (1976) and Ludovic Kennedy "The Airman and the Carpenter" (1984) have repeatedly questioned since 1976, finally fit into all the right places. Ahlgren and Monier have tied up so many loose ends with the simplest approach of all. It has been apparent to many investigators since 1976 that Hauptmann was "scapegoated" by the police in a frantic attempt to solve this 3-year-old kidnapping murder. If that is so, and there is enough evidence uncovered now to conclude that a travesty of justice did take place in Flemington, who really did it? If Hauptmann wasn't in New Jersey climbing a ladder, who was? In this age of public awareness regarding parental abuse (and murder) of young children (Susan Smith in South Carolina is a good example) is it so implausible to think that a parent could have been responsible for a kidnapping hoax 66 years ago? Even if that parent is the greatest hero in the world? All the more reason, I would think, for a man to cover up a foolish and sadistic prank that went awry. How would it have looked to the world if the "Lone Eagle" admitted accidentally dropping his young child from a homemade ladder out of the nursery window on a rainy, windy March evening while playing one of his typically sadistic "pranks" on his wife? When you read biographies of Charles Lindbergh you begin to understand where Monier and Ahlgren are coming from. He seems to have been a pathological prankster. Even Anne Lindbergh, in a letter to her mother-in-law, written on the night of the "kidnapping", reveals that her first instinct upon looking at an empty crib was that Charles took him "as a joke." Why would any mother even think of such a thing? Because her husband had a very twisted side to his personality, playing sadistic pranks throughout his life. The authors have reinvestigated the case, and the trial, as if it were happening today. Policemen of the 30s were trained simply as foot soldiers in the battle against gangster crime and had no psychological training to ever enable them to suspect a hero - (it was also pre-Watergate). The New Jersey Police actually handed the entire investigation of the "kidnapped" child over to it's father! Yes, Lindbergh was the order-giver during the entire investigation up until the baby's body was found in the woods near his home 2 months later. Even H.Norman Schwarzkopf, Sr. (Jersey Chief of Police) took orders from the missing baby's father! The authors have brilliantly explained many puzzling episodes in the enire fiasco - Why did Lindbergh lie at the Hauptmann trial? Why did the Lindbergh family suddenly, and secretly, leave the United States? Was it the fault of the Press that the Lindberghs could not live in America? Why did Lindbergh become an outspoken anti-Semite and Nazi sympathizer? There will never be an end to the complexities of this case but this book offers any reader an enticing challenge to think skeptically and logically about our justice system as well as the realities of human nature.

Excellent and Insightful 80 Years Later

This is a very well researched and well written account of the known facts of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. However, if you think of Charles A. Lindbergh as a genius and a saint your hackles will go up. Because the authors very convincingly explain what MANY things were wrong with the accepted historical view of the crime. The idea that big time risk taker Lindbergh dropped the baby as part of a prank is a serious possibility.
This book is a wonderful expose of just what is terribly wrong with the cult of celebrity which we so fervently uphold in America. (S'up O.J.?) What do you call a guy who pours water over his wife's dress at a formal gathering of prestigious and famous people? If he's some dude from down the street or perhaps your fiance you might call him an Ahole or a jerk. Or crazy. But if he was the first man to fly an airplane alone from the US to Europe you call this creep Charles Lindbergh. How many know that the great aviator never went to college? NEVER FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL? Was essentially ignorant and went about with a chip on his shoulder regarding moneyed people, yet married into an aristocratic family and launched a campaign to humiliate his wife from that moment forward?
There are some reviewers here who say that it is shameful to "tear down" a family with the nasty theories in this book. I say Charles Lindbergh did that himself. He was a strange bird to be sure and if you want to know more about his personality and the way he conducted his life just read this book. And the authors didn't even know when they wrote it that the great hero was responsible for seven illegitimate German kids! I feel so sorry for the Morrow family. What did Anne do to deserve all this? She bought into the cult of celebrity.
