THE textbook for ASE certification!

If you want to obtain ASE certification, you want this book. If autobody work is your hobby, you want this book. Covers auto-body work, from tools to procedures, as any such book should. But it also covers areas that most others don't. Shop layouts, safety equipment and uses, (What fire extenguisher to use on what type of fire.) hand tools and techniques for use, types of sheet metal, air compressors, how to set-up air supply lines, types of welders, and more. From small repairs to painting, and diagnosing paint problems. Each chapter starts with objectives of what you should learn, and is followed by questions (multi choice, essay, math) to test what you learned. Followed by appendices for shop terms & abbreviations, decimal & metric equivalents, fluid and air nozzle selection charts, viscosity conversion charts. If you want to work on cars, professionally or as a hobby, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!

Very informative. Almost 1,000 pages of material. Has 22 Chapters in which they talk about body shapes and parts, tools and special equipments (frame alignment machines), almost if not all types of welding and cutting, metal working techniques and basically from applying body filler to repairing nicks, to final detailing and then some more.

Best basic fire sprinkler book I've come accross.

In my opinion, after more than thirty years in the fire sprinkler business, "Design of Water-Based Protection Systems," is by far the best introductory level text into the water-based systems world of fire protection. I personally used the text in the training environment for several years.

The book is well written, concise and well received by students. I would highly recommend this text for anyone contemplating setting up a training situation in the industry.

Just Started But very informative so far

This book may be a tad bit outdated, but the contents still applies. This book is geared toward a small group of people, though maybe larger than I think. I've not read near 1/4 of the book, but I can tell that this book is for those that are interested in learning as much about Water-based Fire Protection, and the design of such systems. I am a Fire Protection design technician of N.I.C.E.T. Level 1 trying to move on to Level II and eventually III or IV. Since this is not a trade that is taught in many schools, so it's on the job training, and occasionally any other training available, I frequently take online courses as well as webinars that pertain to this trade. So recently in a magazine FPC- A fire protection Contractor magazine, that listed multiple books that might be helpful all around, this was one of the books. This book cover's a wide array of topics, from NICET required learning, to special hazard's protection systems. Water-Spray Systems, Deluge Systems, and Mist Systems on down covering much of the Fire Protection Handbook, but more for the designer. I would definitely recommend this book to any one in the Fire Protection Industry, especially those that are designer's of water-based systems, be it fresh/new designers to seasoned veteran's. This book is great.

Terri L. Fivash delivers another amazing book, yet again! This book was not quite as fast-paced or exciting as any of the Dahveed books or Joseph, but that was someone nice after reading so many action-packed books. Ruth and Boaz also has a huge amount of heart, and some insights into the culture and what things would have actually been like that no one has ever pointed out to me before. After reading this book, the whole story made much more sense because of what Boaz says to Tobeh when he confronts him at the gate about Ruth. As for spiritual insights in the book, Fivash makes some very powerful statements about God and His ever-perfect plans for our lives.

It was a very good read. This author does fantastic research and you feel as if you are truly in the time of the story. Very believeable. The book notes and character descriptions are very helpful. It left me wishing for the story to be continued, alas there are no more biblical writings to do so.

Everyone Needs Grace!

Terri Fivash,injects vibrant life into my favorite biblical romance of Ruth and Boaz. Interesting insights,based on Fivash's extensive research into the culture and times of her characters, enable the reader to better understand the actions of the characters in the story. For instance, Ruth's marriage proposal to Boaz had always seemed out of character to me. Now I have a clearer picture of this episode. The author treats each episode with sensitivity without losing anything from her graphic descriptions.

RUTH & BOAZE captured my attention equally, as well as, the author's account of JOSEPH! Fivash graphically reveals the thoughts and emotions of her characters. Each chapter left me feeling as though I had actually been there!

Throughout the entire story, God's grace comes through clearly. However, as in JOSEPH, individuals must make a choice whether or not to receive His grace. If not, they do "reap what they sow!"

Perfect size, Beautifully typeset, and a Great Translation

First of all let me say that this is my very favorite translation. Though not the most literal on a word-for-word basis (for that I would recommend the NASB), it is highly readable and faithful to the Hebrew text presenting the meaning in a beautiful and literary style that is unparalleled in my opinion. The JPS version is an absolute pleasure to read.

Another thing I have always appreciated about the Jewish Publication Society is the attention to detail and aesthetics in their publications regarding the appearance on the page: Typeface, layout, etc. This edition is no exception. It is compact, printed beautifully on high quality paper and with a durable paper/leather look binding. The Hebrew and English are in parallel columns, line by line, and the type is pleasing to the eye, clear, and easy to read despite its necessarily small point size.

I hope this review has been helpful - I have recommended this translation for years now and was pleased to still find it in various editions today.

A Good Tanakh for Jews and non-Jews

The Jewish Publication Society's TANAKH is a good text for any serious Bible reader and scholar. The preface informs the reader how the translators and editors proceded with the redacting of the Hebrew and English. This preface gives the reader a clear guide on this translation.

Readers should realize that this translation was done for Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Jews. There are citations in this volume with view that this TANAHK was done for the different Jewish movements in English language areas.

The difficutly of doing a translation is obvious. One must realize, at the editors do, that accuracy in biblical translations can be elusive. The editors clearly state what sources they use which in of itself can be a challenge. Readers should not that there are footnotes which carefully explain variations in translation of difficult or obscure passages.

Another important feature is that the editors were honest enough to admit where they were not sure of the Hebrew.

Those who are not familiar should know that the organization of the TANAKH is different than the Christian Old Testament. Yet, Christians can benefit from this book. Those who know Hebrew can compare translations with the Hebrew and decide on the accuracy of translations.

The editors placed a Guide to Hebrew Footnotes at the end of this book. This guide is an important asset of this book in that those who can read Hebrew have a useful tool in understanding the Hebrew. A good companion volume is THE JEWISH STUDY BIBLE which helps the serious reader. This reviewer favorably recommends the JPS HEBREW-ENGLISH TANAKH

bilingual yet compact edition--owned by a Muslim

I favor this edition because it is the smallest Tanakh I have scene. I do not think it is pocket sized (being around 3 inches thick), but it is relatively small, and (for my friends at least) the print (including with the diacritical marks) is readable. Although there are better translations available (NRSV for commentary and scholarly notes; Yung’s Literal translation for the sheer majesty of the Hebrew), I nonetheless like this edition, mainly because it is the only bilingual, yet compact edition I have found.
As a Muslim (who believes that the Holy Quran cannot be fully understood without the Bible), I am proud to own this edition.

A Magnum Opus in English on Jewish Law

Menachem Elon's work on Jewish Law is exceptional. The work provides the most comprehensive discussion of Jewish law in English that I have ever seen. This work was recommended by a law school professor many years ago. I never cease going back to it. The discussions regarding each of the major legal sources along with their relevant commentaries is invaluable for learning what one should "know" to be conversant in this topic. The footnotes are also excellent and provide quick references to relevant passages in the original sources. This is not light reading and needs to approached when one is fresh. Given that, if one has a desire to get an overview of the history and inner workings of Jewish law, there is no better source of which I can think to recommend.

Another good (but but not excellent) title in the American Heritage Junior Library range

When I was growing up in the 1960's and 1970's, every public and school library had a set of the titles in the American Heritage Junior Library range. Those of us who discovered these books were truly fortunate. These titles were literate, informed, and included excellent artwork and photography. Additionally, they were written by some of the best authors of the time, men like Stephen Sears, who penned several titles. Besides the books in this group, American Heritage also published a group of books in the "Horizon Caravel" series, which were more international in flavor.

"Franklin Roosevelt," published in 1970, is good but not one of my favorite books in the group. At the time I was growing up, FDR had assumed a near- religious, almost mythical status among many Americans who grew up in the Depression/World War II era. For these individuals, it was taken for granted that FDR had personally saved the country, and he was looked upon as a quasi-deity. The tone of this book reflects that attitude, and it is very plain that the author regarded Roosevelt as a great savior devoid of any faults. The only Presidents to achieve anywhere near the exalted status which Roosevelt enjoyed were Washington and Lincoln.

In the years since, historians have taken a more balanced stance toward his presidency. There is no doubt that FDR did more to change the role of government in America than any President, before or since, and certainly did much help those most affected by the depression. Besides painting an extremely favorable picture of President Roosevelt, this book's author is unkind, to say the least, toward those who opposed any of his policies. In a way, this title serves a role beyond being a biography. It reflects the the thinking of so many Americans who came to regard Roosevelt as the man who saved the country. It will be important for future historians to understand this phenomenon.

This volume is a bit more difficult to find than some of the other books in the Junior Library series, but it is well worth tracking down if you are collecting a set. I would only recommend that the potential reader, especially young readers, to keep in mind that not everyone agrees that Roosevelt was the perfect President as he is portrayed here. In any case, it is an enjoyable read, and I would hate to discourage youngsters who might be so inclined to put down their video games and read about this interesting and vastly important man.

The American Heritage Library volume on FDR

Most of us who remember the American Heritage Junior Library from our youths have fond memories of it and this volume on "Franklin Delano Roosevelt" by Wilson Sullivan shows why. Opposite the Foreword there is a page showing postage stamps commemorating FDR from Monaco, El Salvador, and the United States; Roosevelt was a dedicated philatelist from his youth. This represents the sort of details that are found through this informative volume. Just in terms of the photographs you have FDR playing Uncle Bopaddy in his senior year at Groton, about to lift himself out of a car in 1932, the edited first page of his first inaugural address, a bottle celebrating the TVA with Roosevelt's head as the cork, and FDR driving around Fala, the infamous Scotch terrier. There are also the most famous pictures of FDR's political career: standing on a street talking with a voter during the Depression and the tear stained face of Chief Petty Officer Graham Jackson playing "Going Home" after the President's death. Add to this a few choice cartoons about both Franklin (A young boy write "ROOSEVELT" on the sidewalk and his sister reports "Mother, Wilfred wrote a bad word") and Eleanor (one amazed miner deep underground tells the other, "For gosh sakes, here comes Mrs. Roosevelt).

The Editors of "American Heritage" magazine set the tone for this look at FDR by making it clear that it was not until the summer of 1921 when Roosevelt was struck down by polio that his character turned into that of a great politician (and political leader, since those are not the same thing). The key quote is Roosevelt's political philosophy that "Government has a final responsibility for the well-being of its citizenship." Within that context Sullivan tells the story of FDR's life and political career as emphasizing action rather than talk and experimentation rather that theory, both of which are exemplified as the guiding principles behind his legislative New Deal. Within these pages Sullivan tries to reconcile the scion of Hyde Park with the diplomat of Casablanca, Teheran, and Yalta. However, it must be noted that you will not find any mention of Lucy Mercer, the woman with whom FDR had an affair in 1918 and in whose presence he died in 1945. Still, it is easy to see what that sort of detail would not be deemed important in a juvenile biography published in 1970; today, such things have considerably more salience, as I am sure most young students are painfully aware.

One advantage of this volume is that it focuses primarily on Roosevelt's years in the White House. The first chapter deals with his life before being stricken with polio while FDR is elected president by the end of the second. Chapters are then devoted to the New Deal, FDR's reinvention of government, his efforts to prepare the nation for World War II, and his tenure as Commander in Chief for most of the war. Young readers will get a sense of exactly why FDR was the first 20th century President to get his visage on a coin and understand why the Republicans passed through a Constitutional Amendment limiting Presidents to two terms of office as soon as they controlled Congress. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the most significant President of the 20th century (Richard Nixon comes in second because of detente and Watergate) and this book certainly helps you appreciate that particular judgment of history.

I have this book now for nearly 20 years. I have to get new copies because it is continuously being borrowed from my library. This book is a story of a couple in Christian ministry who suffer at the hands of their "Christian" but unsaved members and church leaders. But the faith and courage is so encouraging it is a book that I would recommend to present day Pastor's wives, especially from the more established and traditional church organizations. God's grace is sufficient.

Did She or Didn't She?

Did Lizzie Borden murder her father and stepmother with an axe? This book will not provide you with an answer to that question but it will provoke the reader to begin a journey for the truth. The Lizzie Borden Sourcebook is interesting because it contains copies of all the original newspaper articles written about the double murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. Adding to the book's authenticity, are the many enjoyable pen and ink drawings of the key players and landmarks pertaining to this puzzling murder mystery. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in mysteries, true crime, or Lizzie Borden.

Fascinating first-hand accounts

This book is a compilation of hundreds of newspaper articles in chronological order about the Lizzie Borden case, from initial coverage of the "shocking crime" to news accounts about Lizzie's death decades later. Many articles surprise the reader with their blatant factual errors, while others impress with eloquent writing. Some of the journalists who covered the Borden trial were insightful and gifted writers. The book has no photos, but it does have several dozen pen-and-ink drawings. The book also includes the complete transcript of Lizzie Borden's testimony at the inquest. I would recommend the book to any Borden buff.

Although this book is somewhat different to other true crime books, it's still a great read. A compilation of hundreds of newspaper articles, it is interesting to follow the personal opinion of some of the journalists. Some of them aren't even looking for the truth, they just want to give the gory details. The book shows articles, starting with the discovery of the bodies untill Lizzie's death. I guess no one will ever get to know the truth, but isn't that what makes the story of Lizzie Borden so great?
