A small masterpiece of its kind
By Shalom Freedman
Many years ago I wrote a Ph.D. dissertation on American- Jewish Literature. I thought at the time that I had largely 'covered' the subject. Josh Lambert's remarkable Guide shows me how wrong I was. He has explored the subject in a far deeper and more extensive way than I had, broadening my 'specialist's' understanding. But the singular quality of the work is not only in the 'information' it provides, and the sense it gives of how very rich American- Jewish Literature is, and how well it goes beyond the Bellow- Malamud - Roth perception of it. Each of the summaries made here is done with great intelligence and literary skill. Each is a highly readable little essay in itself. And each will give readers new knowledge and more answers about writers they may have heard vaguely about , but know nothing real about.
This work is in its quality a model piece of writing. I enjoyed it immensely and will continue to use it, to refer to back to it in the future.
I believe each and every person who cares a bit about American- Jewish Literature, about American Literature about Literature can be instructed and delighted by this work.
A small masterpiece of its kind.

Fairly comprehensive and pithy
By C. Fischer
A well-written survey that not only covers most of the field but also places each work in its historical and stylistic context as well as referencing other books one might want to pursue for further reading. I know at least one important American Jewish writer whose works were omitted entirely, and that is the novelist and biographer, Bernard Wolfe. Perhaps this is because Wolfe's concerns were not limited to Jewish-American life, but many of his characters were Jewish and he is a great stylist, strongly influenced by Joycean wordplay and the occasional stream of consciousness as well. Other omitted writers include Sol Yurick and Mordecai Richler. Mordecai Richler was specifically excluded as being Canadian, but is mentioned four times in the notes for further reading.

informative and entertaining
By Lawrence Goldman
Useful and entertaining survey of the unique and important contributions of Jewish writers to the American experience. Erudite but not pretentious. I read it cover to cover in one sitting.
