Not useful, badly written, and way too expensive

It's pretty hard to take a book on writing seriously when it's written this badly and fails to follow its own advice. Here's an example --a sentence lauding the active voice:

"With active voice, the writer starts with an actor who performs the action, and this development IS FOLLOWED as the sentence is read."

The moving story of Ruth, with its themes of loyalty, loving kindness (hesed), and redemption, is one of the great narratives of the Bible.

Socially, the Israelites were aware of their responsibility to protect the weak and unprotected among them. Redemption secures the life of the people as a community, not just as individuals. In this story, Boaz fills the familial obligation to marry the widow of a deceased relative who never was able to father children, both to continue the family line and protect an otherwise vulnerable woman.

The authors provide a critical, line-by-line commentary of the biblical text, presented in its original Hebrew, complete with vocalization and cantillation marks, as well as the 1985 JPS English translation. The extensive introduction places the book within its historical, literary, and critical context, discusses contemporary interpretations of the story of Ruth, and examines its major motifs and themes, among them: family, marriage and levirate marriage in biblical and ancient Israel, redemption and inheritance, hesed, and the book’s connection with the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.

About the Author
Dr. Tamara Cohn Eskenazi is professor of Bible at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles. She is the first woman appointed as professor to the rabbinical faculty in HUC-JIR's long history. Earlier she had been on the faculty of the University of Denver, directed the Institute of Interfaith Studies, and co-founded the Jewish Women Resource Center in Denver.

Tikva Frymer-Kensky was a professor of Hebrew Bible and the History of Judaism at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Her areas of specialization included Assyriology and Sumerology, biblical studies, Jewish studies, and women and religion. She was the author of Reading the Women of the Bible (which received a Koret Jewish Book Award in 2002 and a National Jewish Book Award in 2003), In the Wake of the Goddesses, and Motherprayer.

Brief Review of Ruth Commentary

Based on the late Tikva Frymer-Kensky's notes, and similar views on the book, Eskenazi has filled out an already well-informed perspective with her own highly useful research. After having met with Dr. Eskenazi, I have been given a love of the book of Ruth, and I think the reader will love it too. Do not forget to read the notes carefully. There are gems hiding among the well-written comments that can be appropriated not just for sound study, but practical life applications as well. Lovingkindness is what Ruth is about, and Eskenazi's hesed (lovingkindness) filled personality is exemplified through her introduction and easily accessible commentary on Ruth. The commentary is also a bold account of Ruth's boldness. Many authors want to use shock in order to sell books, but Eskenazi uses fact and approachability. She is open to new interpretations, but does not let the latest theological trend push her out of the historical background in which the book of Ruth finds its foundation.

This commentary can be used by Jews, Christians, Muslims, literary historians, or anyone interested in the book of Ruth.

Remarkable Ruth

Eskena and Frymer-Kensky have added an essential commentary to the JPS series. Their development of the themes of Ruth not only reveal the intricacies of the story, they also demonstrate the reasons why Ruth is a critical part of the understanding of hesed. Within the corpus of this short story, the authors provide one insight after another on Hebraic terms, grammatical structure and theological connections. This commentary should be part of every exegetical reference library.

Ruth and Chesed

I absolutely loved this commentary. I purchased this book for a class I am currently taking, but read more than the required readings. I now see the story of Ruth in a different light. I was intrigued by the commentary. I searched other sources and found this series to be a great starting point for biblical studies.

Poignant, reverent tribute to our humble Veterans

What started out as one conversation with a veteran of WWII turned into a full-time project for Rick as he realized how many stories of this humble generation had never been told or heard. Spurned on by his deep, genuine respect and reverence for our beloved, humble veterans of WWII, Rick traveled extensively to record interviews. Realizing the magnitude of these stories of courage and self-sacrifice, and deeply awed by them himself, Rick felt impelled to share these amazing accounts with the rest of the world. So he, took on the enormous task of writing/publishing this book. Not only should we extend unending thanks to the valiant men and women veterans of WWII but I send my thanks to Rick for his own valor and courage, not only as a veteran himself but for his selfless devotion to ensuring these stories are told and held forever in history. Looking forward to Volume II, Rick!

Great little book!

I am not very good at telling my 3 year old about God and Bible stories--her attention span is shorter than a mouse! This book gives you ideas on what to do, and the story is very short. Just what my daughter (and her busy mother who also totes a 4 mth old) needs.

I really liked this 40 day prayer book and i did it alongside my sister. We learned so much about the importance of prayer and being prepared for the last day events that are to come. Not only to be prepared in avoiding being partakers of the plagues, but to be prepared by asking for the Holy Spirit now so we can make it through to the end.

I highly recommend it! So many are neglecting prayer, the baptism of the Holy Spirit and if we are not careful, we will be those foolish virgins.

Exceptional Analytical Exposition

A truly unparalleled achievement, within the span of approximately 350 pages ( Five Parts: Basics at 100 pages, Schrodinger
occupies the following 120 pages, Pauli's electron: 30 pages, next is 20 pages many-electron atoms, final part Dirac Equation).
It is apparent that this is a compact presentation. Mathematics is not eschewed. In fact, the first part, that is an exposition of
matrices, operators, eigenvalues and probability can claim completeness in preparing the way for thorough foundation in all that
follows. part one ends with this statement (Page 95):
" Summarizing, we can say that the purpose of the main concept of Quantum Mechanics, the concept of a state described by a
wave function, is to analyze objectively all potential possibilities inherent in the micro-object."
The second part begins with solution of the Harmonic Oscillator (direct series solution of the differential equation ) following which
expositions of Perturbation Theory, Coulomb Field, Spherical Harmonics, Asymptotics; part two ending with a short discussion
of Superposition (Page 231) : "The Superposition Principle is necessary if we want to derive, starting from a general principle,
the dual nature of light and matter, which manifest themselves as waves and as particles...the probabilities will be proportional
to the squares of the amplitudes."
Part Three incorporates (electron) Spin: "....an internal degree of freedom connected with its intrinsic angular momentum, which
does not depend on its motion in space." The author begins with commutation relations and ends on this note referencing the
Pauli Exculsion Principle: "...the spin arises already in the nonrelativistic theory."
Part Four: Atoms, beginning with Exclusion Principle and Symmetry: "The most significant corollary of this interrelation is the
determination of the symmetry transformation group for the hydrogen atom."
Part Five: Derivation of the Dirac Equation, Lorentz Covariance, use of Dirac Equation in physical problems ( that is, free electron,
then electron on homogeneous magnetic field followed by spherical symmetry and spherical harmonics, selection rules, Zeeman effect
and splitting of energy levels.)
Finally, from the preface: "...endeavored to avoid using images from the classical theory...attempted to familiarize the reader with the
basic concepts underlying a quantum description of the states of atomic systems...a fairly detailed examination of the mathematics..."
Obviously, this is not a first initiation into the subject matter.
However, the prose is unambiguous, mathematical derivations clear as a bell , and the author's philosophy plainly spelled out.
Highly recommended for it's detailed analysis of quantum physical problems.

Excellent for Children!

I grew up listening to this story on audio tapes (not that I'm THAT old...), and I must say, not only is it a captivating story that makes a good chapter bedtime story book, but it really does help children grasp the concept that sometimes a loving God has to allow bad things to happen. When I became an adult, I realized that some people question whether God is really a God of love because of what He allows to happen. It had never occurred to me to ask such questions, and I believe this book was a strong factor in that. I just got a copy for my children and plan on reading it for bedtime stories. Now if I could just find the audiobook....

Best written explanation for children about why bad things happen and people do bad things

I also grew up reading this book. I loved to read and I would check it out of our church library over and over again. It has stayed with me and helps me to explain to others why God allows bad things to happen and why he has to allow sin to run its course. It is Biblically based and helps to understand the war between God and Satan. I am starting to read it to my 5 year old now that she is asking what sin is and why did bad people kill Jesus. It is a wonderful story about God's love for us and his overwhelming desire that all should come to know him and be with him. Although it is a children's book, it is a great read for adults who are new to faith or learning about Christianity.

Every Child should read it

I think this is a must read for every child, and adult too, for that matter. It answers so many questions about life, death, sin and the great conflict between good and evil in our world. I am reading it to my grand kids when they visit and we are all enjoying the thoughts put forth in behalf of Biblical information.

A plodding study of the background, dynamics, and historical treatments of the Rhineland massacre of Jews in the First Crusade. Chazan (Hebrew and Judaic Studies/New York Univ.) turns a potentially compelling article into an overly long book, with needless repetition and analysis, and too many awkward sentences like the following: ``The foregoing survey of the destruction of the Jewish communities of Worms, Mainz, and Cologne has served to concretize this sense of an unanticipated crisis seemingly erupting overnight.'' What does emerge are some insights into a uniquely gory and (possibly) glorious chapter of diaspora Jewish history from nine hundred years ago. We learn that the pope-inspired crusade was taken over by out-of-control German peasant mobs, aided by local burghers who wanted Jews eliminated as competitors rather than killed in Christ's honor. To avoid torture and forcible conversion by the towns' bloodthirsty mob, almost the entire Jewish population of 3,000 opted for suicide. While the sketchy records of this unique bloodbath are liturgical in style, elegiac in tone, and written 36 years after the fact, Chazan analyzes them as though they were scripture. He quotes Maimonides in pointing out the problems of Jewish law involved with parents slaughtering their children, but there are other occasions where Chazan seems to have little grasp of basic Jewish theology. He does not, for instance, see antimaterial and antisexual passages as aberrant. As Chazan views the events of 1096 in historical perspective, he sees the political struggle of Masada eclipsing the religious conflict of the Rhineland as the modern paradigm of extreme Jewish resistance in the face of imminent destruction. Jews,Crusaders, and the Church - A New Perspective

This book fulfills its promise: it examines carefully the impact of the 1096 events on the Ashkenazi Jewry. The author uses striking passages from contemporary chronicles to illustrate his points while giving the reader the opportunity to form his or her own opinion about the events there described (the chronicles are found, in a highly readable translation and in full lenght, in the appendix). This book challenges the commonly held view that the first crusade lead to a wide spread destruction of Ashkenazi communities and precipitated their movement to the east. While several leading centres of Ashkenazi intellectual life were destroyed, they were quickly rebuilt and the decline of Rhine Jewry did not occur until the 13th century (in connection with the great plague). Chazan focuses of the diversity of Jewish response to immediate threat which ranged locally from the effort to disperse into the countryside to taking refuge in palaces, and individually from conversion to martyrdom. The kiddush Hashem again is far from uniform, ranging from acceptance of death my enemy's hand and suicide, to a new, activist form of taking other Jew's life to prevent him or her from falling into the hand of the enemy. The talmudic precedents for each of these patterns of behavior are discussed. Finally, this is also a highly novel view on the Jewish-Christian relation in those turbulent times. Written with erudition as well as ease, this is not only an informative, but also very absorbing reading experience.

Very readable, the history backed up with striking, and sometimes heart-rending, eye-witness reports from both Christians and Jews. He conveys the truth that those involved were not just a series of names or stereotypes from the distant past but real individuals with their own, often conflicting, reactions. It changed many of my assumptions about this event. Very convincingly argued, even in those few instances where I might disagree with some aspect of the conclusion he draws. And that is another virtue of this book - Chazan has a definite thesis, yet he presents enough of the story and the evidence in this short study to allow the reader to construct his/her own perspective on the event.

everything you ever wanted to know about being a tour guide

I recently took a college level course in a hospitality and tourism curriculum and this was the text used for the class. I was skeptical as to what a book could teach you about being an effective tour guide. During the class I had the opportunity to lead a group to London for a 9 day tour. I was amazed at the many tips the book gave that were helpful. He discusses the psychological aspects of "herding instincts" and how people can revert to childish behavior when they submit all decision making for a week or two to a tour guide. It includes tips on how to set up a tour package and how to get the best deals from hotels and airlines. He also discusses the different types of guide jobs including positive and negatives aspects of each. Very Helpful book!

Useful for novice Tour Managers

In this handbook you will find nothing about presentation and interpretation skills of contemporary tourist guides. The book is focused on some strictly practical (technical) aspects of the tour guide's job. It can be useful, however, for all novice tour managers - especially for those who enter the profession without previous training and who won't be working as local or on-site guides. This will be a good start for them to learn generally about the tour industry, tourism market, tourism suppliers, types of tours, etc. The book promotes a self-teaching way of acquiring the professional knowledge; each chapter is followed by an 'Activity' page with relevant questions and tasks, so you can check out what you have learned. The only part of the book which might be interesting for more experienced guides is about client and escort psychology, but there are only 12 pages dedicated to that topic. In sum, I expected much more from this book.

Don't Let Stats Scare You

This book makes stats much easier to swallow. Excellent chapter exercises to apply the learning, although, sometimes the formulas and answers don't seem consistent so I wonder if I got an early version before addt; edits and corrections were made.

Great book to use and apply in the real health care work environment.

Basic!

Yes this book is really basic. If you have math skills above the third grade you will be falling asleep. I think this book was written for third graders, at least that is the level of mathematics you will need. Terminology is written on a fifth grade level. Simple, very simple for a college level programs.
